Is Carlos Martinez in it?
Yesterday, the Cardinals followed a Jack Flaherty start with these names: Alex Reyes, Andrew Miller, Jordan Hicks.
That's a pretty good bullpen if you are predicting a postseason approach to how games end.
Maybe Reyes winds up in the rotation; I'd argue it's easiest to manage his innings and maximize his potential that way.
Maybe Martinez becomes the three-headed relief monster with Miller and Hicks.
Don't forget Ryan Helsley and Genesis Cabrera.
Could the Cardinals use Kimbrel? Sure. What team could not? I'm not going to sit here and tell you they would not be better off without a dominant closer added. That would be crazy.
But Kimbrel's demands are apparently not appealing to all teams out there, and the Cardinals learned the hard way when it came to signing an older, supposedly elite reliever late in spring training.
No one in Cardinals camp is eager to experience another Greg Holland situation, and that was not as spur-of-the-moment as it seemed at the time. The Cardinals had done their research, and still got burned. No one is on their radar like Holland was then, at least not at this time.
