Well, Lance Lynn put up a fight, I'll give him that. And the fellows "fought til the end" by loading the bases and all. But yes, they didn't score a run and lost the game, so I see where you're coming from. Look, is it possible they're a contending pretender? Is that an allowed choice? Basically, this is not the team they drew up, this is not a lineup at guys that should be in the postseason, but timing and the Memphis infusion in a small sample size and the amazing starting pitching and the craaaaaappy opponents in the past eight games (and all these upcoming Reds games) make you think that they can still contend, especially as the Rockies have to play the Diamondbacks a bunch.
Hello Harlin, and I'm with ya man. Why not keep him, especially as he's shown to be a viable option at first base (a pickin' machine!) ...in 210 at bats he's slashing .310/.374/.557. And he actually hits better away from Busch Stadium.
Well, as I start this paragraph, we have to say that this is speculation, since I can't get in the head of the Marlins' GM or Derek Jeter (though I often feel like I carry myself like Derek Jeter ... no wait, that's Michael Jeter from "Evening Shade."). Piscotty's contract isn't too daunting, so I'm sure that makes him pretty enticing, but his stats this season, even in a weird year for him emotionally, don't show progress. You'd think that Sierra and Adolis Garcia would be two young upside guys that make other team's mouth water. And we also have a little gauge -- it was reported that the A's turned down Piscotty and Weaver/Flaherty for Sonny Gray. Obviously every GM is different, but that at least gives us a gauge on the thinking inside a front office.
I'm guessing Grichuk. They've given him a lot of opportunities now, and while he's a masher (He's got 19 homers), his striking out has been sadly consistent, and yes, I know Randal is gonna strike out a lot regardless, but the other numbers don't line up that this guy should be a top-3 outfielder on the Cards next season. But maybe he's a top-3 outfielder somewhere, which means you can get something good for him.
I don't see any reason why he would be a target to bring back.
though I'd miss my man Eugene Koo!
Ha! I was thinking about that yesterday. Especially in a situation where the dude is a key performer in September. I just hope we even get to see this fellow with a sub-3 ERA in a situation instead of SWO
The Weeknd and Vampire Weekend.
I like our coverage of hockey! Why can't we be excited about all the sports, all the time? I got into a long email discussion yesterday with a reader about a SLU column I wrote. He was mad that I mentioned Mizzou basketball in the column, and then took it as a slight of our coverage of SLU. Folks, we have a human being (Stu Durando) who's occupation is writing articles about SLU! We cover them pretty thoroughly. We ALSO cover Mizzou thoroughly!
I expect the fellows to come out hungrier than the other game. Their performance in the previous game was UNACCEPTABLE. It was disgusting. I believe Barry can make it work with these guys, and am really interested to see how he coached them up this week. That Acy guy was just so bad last weekend, so I'm curious if he'll start. But if Mizzou doesn't play passionately, we could have a weird year ahead of us.
Waino strikes me as the kind of guy who would be OK with going to the bullpen -- after all, one of his heroes, John Smoltz, did so to much success. I think his career will end with him still wearing the birds of the bat.
The Angels have been making some proactive moves in the past couple weeks, trying to get into the postseason, trying to finally win a postseason game with Mike Trout. I love Simmons, one of those players I've always been intrigued by, along with an Evan Longoria, for some reason. So yeah, DeJong at third and Simmons at short sounds enticing, but I don't know how realistic.
OK guys and girls, I've gotta get going. Always fun! And thanks for your questions. Please follow me on the Twitter if you don't: www.twitter.com/hochman ... and the Post-Dispatch is www.twitter.com/stltoday
