Salutations! Welcome to the weekly Cardinals chat. A weekend sweep of the Cubs for the Local Nine. An inter league visit from the Twins. Wainwright is finishing off his rehab start in Springfield with an eye on a weekend return to Cardinals rotation. A five-game winning streak and sweep of Windy City week. Five walk-offs, three in the past week. In short, I have no idea where the chat will take us. But we will take more than 14 innings to get there. I ask for some initial patience here as I’m waiting on an appointment and may have some blogs/News to crank out for the site, too. I’ll dig in a little early here to compensate.
It’s hard to quantify “fight” and “resilience.” These seem to be things that are proven only anecdotally or clear only in hindsight. Some rather mediocre teams have good “fight” because that’s all they’ve got to win. I’ve seen several losing teams that have tons of “resilience” just not to call it a year on Aug. 2 and keep playing. What I think this 2018 Cardinals Team has shown is that it has multiple ways to win a game. And the offense hasn’t really revved yet. They’ve won games via the bullpen, had dominant starts, had opportunistic rallies, and have had Miles Mikolas. That’s what stands out to me: the many varied ways the Cardinals can win and that adds dimensions to their “fight” that will serve them well.
Cecil his headed for a rehab assignment this week. Alex Reyes wil next appear at High-A Palm Beach. Cecil will likely get tested in back-to-back outings before cleared for return. That’s the team’s plan today. Earliest Reyes can return is May 28.
Next month will require those slow starts to vanish. With Molina out, it would be a good time for the Cardinals to become Marcell Ozuna’s Team and have him carry the offense like he can.
Absolutely. Sure seems to be. Or, a really strong fourth outfielder on a contending team.
Absolutely, otherwise why would people read the writing? Can’t have a game like last night and then give readers wallpaper in the morning. The story has to fit the game, has to rise to the description. That doesn’t mean it chooses sides. Covering the 2016 World Series, I was aware that history was being made and the story better reflect that, capture that, and take the reader there. A lot of us got into this business to sit ringside for history. You can’t have that seat and type agate. Readers deserve more.
Just an extra day. They scored it for him when they opted not to get him against the Cubs. It also sets up for Gant on turn and then Wainwright coming in. Means Martínez also faces Twins twice if they want.
Yesterday, Mozeliak said Martinez is primarily a first baseman and they would not look for reasons to move him to the outfield, not unless forced. Clearly, Pham’s health here is the wild card. A factor in this is the devotion to Ozuna in Left. That seems like the place Martinez would go with Fowler in center. But the Cardinals stopped just shy of saying if they need an OF, they’ll dip to Memphis not Martínez.
He had actually been optioned off the roster three times this season:
But they all fall under one option year. That’s the best way to think about these things. They are option years. Up and down as often as allowed in one option year, and a player gets three option years. In rare cases does a player qualify for a fourth option year.
He will remain at Class AA for the time being. The Cardinals want to see improvement with his defense and other elements of the position that they believe he can do at that level, where his offense clearly is a fit.
Because if Game of Thrones teaches us anything it’s this: when you have a giant, use him.
Especially against men from the North.
Not if they don’t trade for him, and that doesn’t seem likely.
Especially for the writers!
He has been. Exactly the kind of starting pitcher that turns a team that will hover around .500, maybe tease a wild-card bid, or wait for other teams to fall to them into a contender. Like Kyle Lohse did.
In 1934. Game has changed. First of all, Twins didn't exist back then.
Well that won't happen, so ... you've answered your own question.
Miguel Cabrera is quite good. Triple Crown winner. Albert Pujols is the best righthanded hitter of his generation. He is the Rogers Hornsby of his time.
Please don't confuse the Land of 10,000 Lakes with the Land of One Swamp. Thanks.
