They knew what they had and it seemed like if Heyward had said yes the Cardinals would have been thrilled to get him -- and then busy trying to figure out if they had to trade one of the younger outfielder for starting pitching. Trading Piscotty was not something the Cardinals were eager to do.

I heard Epstein comment the Cubs moved 40% of their rotation at the deadline 3 consecutive years, leading up to their run in 15. He said what they got back (Arrietta, Addison Russell, etc) play a huge role in their success. Had they not been sellers then, they wouldn't be winners now.
I think the Cards should be smart sellers this summer. Realistically this is a 90 win team. Why not take the opportunity to get prospects back? -

Sorry, I'm not willing to give Matheny a complete pass. This team had a perplexing spring training and it's lukewarm play has carried over into the first two months of the year. The Cards offense beats up on bad minor league pitching against the rebuild teams in the league. Otherwise, pitching, defense, and speed are mostly horrible on this team. Advanced metrics would have this team at 10 games over 500 based on the offense alone. Basically, this is a 500 team going sideways.

Here's the thing: Even if Cards win, lets say, 85-88 games, it may not even be close enough for a wildcard slot. Not only would we have to beat out the Pirates, but we'd have to beat out good teams who didn't win their division. Ex.: Dodgers or Giants, Nationals or Mets.
Nobody should be calling it a season yet, but if the Cardinals can't keep up with the rest of the National League, they should trade some assets who aren't apart of our current core, and won't be apart of our next core. -

Didn't appear to have any limitations today during workouts, hitting, etc. He just didn't pitch well. I get the question though because we've usually seen him healthy and good or hurt and not good. He didn't have any of the other tells, such as the obvious discomfort on the mound, the picking at his jersey, the pawing the dirt that usually comes when he's hurt.
