Sometimes, they are trying to make the perfect pitch but the ideal situation is to make an anxious hitter swing at a bad one and either make an easy out or strike out. A lot of this depends on who's hitting. A .200 hitter you go right at him. A .300 hitter you're a bit more careful.
Reyes, by my estimation, will be here sometime in June. There's plenty of season left and I'm sure he's learned an important lesson here. If they do, indeed, get nothing out of him this year again, then it might be time to cut bait, as they say in the fishing trade. .
Those younger third baseman are two to three years away, which is the length of the Carpenter contract on the low end and the high end. His average is sub-par now but we've played a month. His defense has been pretty good and his on-base percentage surely will rise. He isn't holding anybody down right now. Did the Cardinals have to do it now? Probably not, but it locked in the infield for at least two more years and there's something to be said for that security.
I'm sure the Cardinals would like to have Bumgarner under the right circumstances. Relative to the outfielders, you have to keep in mind that Ozuna may not be here next year, so you might not have the surplus you think you have.
They seem comfortable with their rotation now and with what they have in Memphis in Ponce de Leon, Gomber, Woodford and, yes, Reyes. I don't think an outside signing is uppermost in their minds now. And, again, Reyes is not out for the season, or anywhere close to that.
If you have a chance to win, you keep Wacha. If you don't, then you trade him. I think they're going to have the chance to win.
There is always that concern but the last couple of times through the rotation the starters, for the most part, have made it past the fifth inning, so the bullpen is all right now. But we're in a stretch of 17 games in 17 days now, so let's keep an eye on it.
No, I saw him packing his bag, not to go to Washington, and other players wishing him well. That seemed a good enough sign for me.
Iglesias certainly is a top-shelf shortstop but DeJong is vastly improved there and the Cardinals don't need any help there now. If somethng would happen to DeJong, Sosa probably would be good enough at Memphis to bring up, or perhaps Edman.
Fowler has hit well where he his, so Shildt wants to keep him there. Later in the season, we might see him move up in the order but Carpenter is their leadoff man until he isn't. Even with a bad start, his on-base percentage is 34 percent, which is a little above average although not for him. Wong could hit first or eighth, but he seems better suited to eighth, for the moment.
Bader will finish every game and likely get at least one at-bat in most of them. There will come a time, especially in the bigger ball parks, where the current regular outfield won't be good enough defensively and Bader will return in a starting role.
It seems to work. Of course, this is a hand-in-glove situation. The players have to produce for a manager to keep them in a certain spot and they have.
That would be my guess, too. Teams can angle for a better deal later.
Long season. Fowler was hitting under .200 and Ozuna didn't have a home run earlier this month.
As reported in the Post-Dispatch, Ryan Helsley will be optioned to Memphis. But he'll be back.
Cabrera has been starting in Memphis, with only middling success. He still ranks as a potential bullpen piece here later in the season.
Even when he wasn't starting, Jose Martinez had appeared in every game. That is the more important issue. He doesn't have to start all of them. Sometimes, it's nice to have him for a late at-bat with the game on the line and you can control his usage.
Not really any of them, but Leone has had two really bad ones in succession and the Cardinals have righthanded relief depth in the system, whereby they could send him out for a while if they chose to. .
This isn't like Mikolas is a raw rookie. He's 30 years old and he's pitched three years professionally in Japan, where I suspect many of the imports are under pressure to perform.
