If somebody would offer a good reliever for Martinez, I am sure Mozeliak would take a long look at that.
Can he play third base? Sorry. The Cardinals could make a play for a starting pitcher, but only if other needs were address, perhaps by subtracting a starting pitcher. There is no need to spend assets on a starting pitcher unless other moves are made to shore up the offense and bullpen.
I believe they will do better than that this winter. There is more urgency.
Because there are currently 10 guys going for give rotation slots. If some of those guys are traded for offense, then maybe.
I bet he re-ups with Chicago, since Russell is finished there.
If they played the Cubs every single game, that might make sense. But they don't.
