Again, the Blues play way slower than they are. They are totally discombobulated. They can't break out of their zone with a succession of crisp passes. They can't generate speed through the neutral zone. They can't hit forwards in stride with long outlet passes. They play on their heels. They get their share of odd-man rushes despite all of that and they screw up most of them.
Think back to last year when Jaden Schwartz was flying. He and Schenn were the most dynamic duo in the league for the first quarter of the season. They got on top of opponents and stayed on top of them. What if those guys played like that again?
As I noted earlier, this team would be in the middle of the speed pack if it played quicker guys (Kyrou, Thomas, Barbashev) for more minutes and moved on from slower guys (Maroon, Blais). While it's true that O'Reilly and Bozak aren't speed guys, I don't blame them for dragging this team down this season. I mean, this team moved on from guys like Brodziak, Thornburn and Jaskin. It's not like the Blues ignored the league trends.
