Well, he has seldom been in the lineup all season. So what did you really expect?
Gant was fine as a replacement starter, but he has been an All-Star caliber set-up guy. The Cardinals need rotation help, but it's not like their bullpen is bullet-proof.
At the time, Voit wasn't getting at bats here and obviously the Cardinals did not consider him an elite prospect. He got the Nick Stavinoah treatment for a while, then got a chance to play elsewhere. Stavinoah had to go to Japan to get that chance and, unfortunately, a knee injury there derailed him. In hindsight, Voit makes the long of list of former Cardinals the team misses.
No, given the package spent to get him, the team has to make every effort to sign him. The man adds presence to the lineup. Analytics guys say there is no such thing, but the guys on the field can feel otherwise.
How is it dysfunctional? Clear management plan, clear line of command. Some decisions haven't worked out and some players are failing to perform well, but there is great operational clarity.
When you talk dysfunctional, you are talking about a S-show like the Los Angeles Lakers.
Matt has a big challenge ahead. Baseball gets tougher in your 30s. There is more and more power pitching, so it is harder and harder to adapt as age starts working on your reflexes. Either he will adjust and become a more complete hitter or he will go down flailing in his career.
The man actually droves home runners. I know the RBI is considered an obsolete statistic about the analytics crowd, but it IS a useful skill. This team can still find work for Harrison Bader and Tyler O'Neill down the road while keeping Ozuna.
I agree that he should try a bunt or two every game early in counts. When pulls a change-up away to the first baseman on a couple of hops. . . . well, that's discouraging.
At this point of his career it's not really practical to send Wong down. He is well into his career and the same hole remains in his swing. Other than making my usual suggestion that he learn to bunt more effectively to steal some hits, I'd out of ideas for him.
There is no doubt that Lackey added some grit to the staff. Maybe Miles Mikolas needs to get back into the lizard eating business to add some of that element.
OK, that's it for this time. Lively chat today! Enjoy the weekend. Downtown will be buzzing with the Game 3 of the Cup Final and the concert/party outside, as well as the Cubs-Cardinals.
