I'm not really the one to ask about the fan perspective, honestly. That could run the spectrum of pros and cons, because there are fans that celebrate players who haven't failed yet, and he hasn't failed yet, but will -- because baseball is hard. So is that a pro or a con?
Con -- Wasting an option when the team doesn't need to. It's doubtful that Gorman will need all three option years, so maybe this isn't much of a con. But it is related to the next one.
Con -- Spending a roster spot on the 40 that isn't necessary for him, when it could be used to protect another of the players coming up on Rule 5.
Pro -- Lefthanded bat off the bench.
Pro -- Experience in the crucible of September.
Pro -- Potential to delight social media for a few minutes, but it's increasingly hard to know if there's anything tangible or beneficial about doing that.
Con -- Service time without guaranteed playing time.
Con -- May not be ready. May be overwhelmed. And that's already what they've asked Oviedo to do.
