Rick, it’s only taken about three weeks for all NL teams except Atl to fall into place in their respective standings. The elite teams are obvious, the tank teams are already fishing at the bottom, and as expected the Cards again are playing as a mid tier team competing for a wildcard, notwithstanding a collapse of a better Mil team. Any more complicated than that?

Good morning, Mr. Hummel. Thank you for your time and the chat. How long do the Cardinals continue with the Paul DeJong Resurrection Trial? During Sunday's telecast, Jim Hayes quoted "Mo" as saying that while DeJong is putting in the time and work, at some point the team needs to see production. Well, that's the exact same thing that Mo said last summer regarding DeJong's struggles. Mo had a chance to fix the production during the offseason, but he decided to go cheap. At what point does DeJong become a "change of scenery" candidate? I come from a family of teachers, and the student isn't always the problem; sometimes it's the teacher and the message. The problem is the Cardinals would be selling low on DeJong, and I think Mo is afraid of getting burned, like he did with Arozarena and Adolis Garcia. Plus, there doesn't seem to be that much available in shortstops on the trade market. How do you see the situation and solution, please? Thanks again.

DeJong has been showing gradual signs of pulling out of his funk of a couple of seasons. Mo's patience may be eroding as it is for many of you but it is not quite the witching hour. There are not many shortstops to be had externally. Tommy Edman could be a shortstop of the future, I guess, but he would not be a Gold Glove caliber player or as good as DeJong defensively. For now, DeJong would be satisfactory as a bottom-of-the-lineup hitter if some of the rest of the lineup--O'Neill, Carlson--would perform as they were expected to perform. This is not all on DeJong although there has to be some improvement. I do not think Edmundo Sosa is the answer as an everyday player. And I am uncomfortable with an up-the-middle defense of Nolan Gorman at second and Edman at shortstop.

When a team has games on 20 consecutive days and 35 days out of 36, the manager and players sit down and map out a scheduled day off for a particular day, no matter how hot that player is or how well he may do against a particular pitcher. It did seem, odd, that Goldschmidt was out Sunday against a fellow he has hammered.

If Nolan Gorman is hitting as he is a couple of weeks from now, the Cardinals will have little choice but to insert him into the DH role, at the least, or map it out where he could play a couple of different positions, like second base or left field besides being a DH.

Not sure if Gorman is ready for 2nd base or not but if he is does the possibility of moving Edman to short and brings him up? I know this is not a new concept but something needs to be done about our shortstop position. I am sure that DeJong and Sosa are wonderful human beings but we need some stick at the position. Thank you for your time.

I know there's going to be a lot of chatter about Gorman taking over at second and Edman moving to shortstop but can you weaken two middle infield positions defensively when defense is the strength of your club?. This may be a decision the club will have to make soon but it doesn't just involve the offense the Cardinals are not getting at shortstop. They're not getting it from the corner outfielders either.

Commish, arguably Gussie’s biggest blunder was letting Steve Carlton walk over a $75k pay dispute in the ‘70’s. Safe to say, DeWitt’s biggest blunder has been to pass on signing Scherzer several times in the past 10 years especially given his outspoken desire to pitch for his hometown Cards?

First, $44 million for four years for Matz is not a below-the-radar signing. Wittgren seems to be tireless and will be a durable reliever. Dickerson is showing signs of lifting the ball better. VerHagen has been hurt. And Brooks is gone, for the moment. The short answer is that none has been lights-out but the team has played only 21 games.

Greetings, Commish,
I know that contracts can play over performance. I understand the wisdom in not over-reacting to small sample size. Yet, we frequently see the small sample size argument forwarded to justify not upgrading at shortstop. Reality is, since the 2019 All Star Game, Paul DeJong has hit .196, with an OPS of .648, 40 home runs, 116 RBI and 10 SB in 850 at-bats. The power is nice, but is 850 at-bats not a large enough sample size for the Cardinals see what they have in Paul and move on? The Cardinals have jettisoned other home-grown Cardinals who are significant contributors in the majors after 50 or fewer at-bats, but DeJong keeps getting the benefit of the doubt. What guidelines dictate these talent evaluation decisions? Thanks for your patience and response to yet another DeJong question. -
