If Yepez continues to be productive and is not a liability defensively, you can use him in the outfield occasionally and as a DH more often. Corey Dickerson has been productive considering the few hits he has had but somebody will have to go and it won't be Pujols. The Cardinals can't carry three DH types too much longer.

Commish, the Cards have another team that is not great and not bad. It has a good chance of winning more than it loses and a 50% chance of making playoffs. Make wildcard and have a 1 in 5 chance to win a pennant and 1 in 10 to win a World Series. Bill DeWitt Jr seems comfortable with fielding teams with these odds as long as 3 million come through the turnstiles. Am I off base anywhere?
-
The Cardinals' chances of making the playoffs are a lot better than 50 % when you consider that they have 51 games remaining against the three weak sisters in their division--Chicago, Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. They also have two-thirds of their games left with the Brewers to be played in St. Louis. The Dodgers were advertised as the best team in the league when the season began. And nothing has changed.

Dickerson has been productive? His xwOBA is .234, compared to .226 for DeJong. He has been terrible.

I would like your thoughts on a contradiction that I see. I’ve heard a lot of people say you can’t bring Gorman up because it would lower the overall defense. Then the team plays Yepez in the corner outfield. I really like the guys bat but you are taking a significant step back in the field. So we can weaken outfield defense for a bat but not the infield? Didn’t Edman play several games in the outfield last year?
-
Yes, but the people that want Gorman to play every day in the field, want that to be second base, with Edman at shortstop and DeJong on the bench or somewhere else. Yepez is not here as an everyday outfielder. He is here to hit. He also has been here for less than a week. Let's see how this progresses. Edman has played outfield but he is a Gold Glove second baseman and he should stay there, at least for now. Now, what to do with DeJong? He wouldn't bring much in trade now so there isn't much reason to hope anything will come out of that.thought.

Commish, what is your take on the three batter minimum and what was its general purpose, and has it succeeded? I heard Jim Edmonds on the TV broadcast Saturday poo pooing a lot of the new upcoming rule changes (i.e. eliminating the shift, larger 1st base). He made some excellent points, I thought anyway, as to why it should not be implemented.

Hello Rick
Is there any worry by the Cardinals that all of these Cardinals with struggles began struggling under the coaching of Jeff Albert. Matt Carp's downturn occurred when Jeff got here. Same for DeJong. Everyone is swinging for the fences and not taking good at bats. 0-9 with runners in scoring position and 0-for the whole year after losing after 7 innings. Time to move on from Jeff Albert -

Thank you for doing this chat!
Back up to starting IF, OF!
-Would you keep Edman at 2b? Seems like he is becoming an elite 2b. Moving him would kind of remind me of Carpenter going from an All-Star at 2b to not at 3b to 1b and eventually a man without a home. Edman certainly has the talent to play ss and outfield but I think we should fix what doesn't work and right now that is not 2b. Thoughts?
-Dejong seems to me to still be a value compared to what the other high paid SS's are making. We used to justify Ozzie's low batting average even though he was the best defensively. I could see if Dejong doesn't perform by June or July it's time to consider another possibility including Gorman. Thoughts? Maybe if July comes without Dejong hitting you try Edman to ss with Gorman coming up?
-Leads me to outfield. I like our starting outfield a lot and see great potential not only having an elite defensive outfield but potential offensively. It's been a few years and offensively I am not sold yet. This is where YEPEZ puts some push on the other 3 and keeps raising the game. But what do you do with Dickerson? Can Dickerson go down if need be?
-Love Pujols but don't see him playing as much. Is he okay with that? -
All good questions. I would leave Edman at second. I wouldn't give up on DeJong yet but I would give Sosa his chance. He was the Cardinals' shortstop when they played their best last September. Pujols' at-bats may decrease if Yepez is productive but I wouldn't make a move with Pujols yet. Any time he thinks he is done, he gets to make that decision himself. Dickerson doesn't have that luxury. .

Much has been said about the lack of production from the shortstop position but you needn't look any further than the lack of production from the outfield. Bader .239, Carlson .220, O'Neill .206. Fix the outfield and your lack of production at shortstop is not nearly as glaring.
