The players have to be retired three years before consideration. This would be tricky if all retire this year because the Cardinals' HOF only inducts two modern players per year. The DeWitts might have to bend the rules one time--or have Wainwright play one more season.

There always has been upside with Reyes and we saw it through much of last season when he was one of the top closers in the league until he was bitten by walks and the home-run ball. I don't think the Cardinals should have any regrets about not trying to move him, nor should they. He was that good.
-
Rick, Cardinal Nation thanks you for these weekly chats. Reyes is a great talent but faces yet another setback as 2022 could be another lost year. Question: How have his series of injuries affected his march toward free agency? When he finally gets healthy, how much more control will the team have?
-
The Cardinals will have one more season of control of Reyes after this season, meaning he could be a third-time arbitration candidate. If he doesn't pitch much, or at all, this season, he might also be a non-tender candidate at the end of the year, as difficult a move as that might be to make.

Walker will play third base, for the most part this season, but I could see him getting some work in the outfield and at first base. We'll know of Arenado's future plans at the end of the season because he has an opt-out but I don't think he'll be using that and, instead will be around several more years. Goldschmidt is signed for two more years after this one. So, Walker's best best might be outfield in the short term, if he comes up at some point next year. Gorman always is a trade chip but there's no reason to do that. In a couple of years this lineup could feature Arenado, Goldschmidt, Yepez, Gorman and Walker. A very intriguing prospect.

Watching the game last night on national tv clearly showed that the team and players are perfectly fine in wanting the fun this season to include Pujols front and center. For example, Yadi hooting from the dug out at Albert for not running home in a 11-2 game and then having him pitch the 9th too. Please explain your take on all this.

In combing through the pitching "rentals" the headliners include Eovaldi, Manaea, and Greinke who all figure to be made available especially should their current teams fall further out of playoff contention by mid season. The ask for any of these type guys even an aging veteran like Zach will probably be fairly significant, but yet this may be something the Cardinals will have to seriously entertain. A lot has already been said Gorman and Liberatore are essentially untouchable especially for merely a few months of one decent type of guy for the stretch run and hopefully the playoffs. Are there any others you suspect down on the farm also are on the no trade list for this brand of hurler too?

There used to be more submarine pitchers in the majors, and they were almost like fast-pitch softball pitchers so there isn't really any legislation against it. The theory on pitching overhand is that more power can be exerted and it's all about power these days, whether it's at-bat or on the mound.

You wouldn't think so. I think the toll was taken not by the loss but by the long delay before there actually was a hearing and then a few more days before a decision was rendered. O'Neill really hasn't hit much since the first day of the season when he knocked in five runs.

The Cardinals have given VerHagen a two-year contract and then he got hurt. They want to see more of him, not sure exactly what they have when they know they have an insurance policy in Woodford. The quick advancement of rookie Andre Pallante also has played a role. Woodford will be heard from again but he has options left and he needs to pile up some innings as a starter in the minors.

I appreciate that you always take the long view on the home team and it is a long season. Despite fits and starts in the offense and pitching and glitch here and there in the defense and base running our team is in the thick of the playoff race in the NL with a chance to win the Central. My question is, given your long view, what trends do you see so far that have to be reversed for the Cardinals to beat the Brewers to the finish line?
-
The only trend that really matters is for the Cardinals' starting pitching to be as good as it can be, and Jack Flaherty's ultimate return should help that cause. No matter how inconsistent the Cardinals' offense is, it will be better than that of the Brewers, who always seem to have a bunch of castoffs in their lineup.

Hello Rick.
WTF is going on with scheduling?
Blues back again to 8:30pm this week.
Cardinals Friday are on Apple TV again. And even with a free game or free trial you still need to submit credit card info to sign up. No thanks!
Cardinals on Sunday are on at 10:30 am on Peacock. What is that about? Not signing up for that service either.
IS MLB trying to lose fans? This has to stop!! -
