Hello, Mr. Hummel. Thank you for your time. I'm glad Julian Javier was named to the Cardinals' Hall of Fame. I'd love it if he would make baseball's Hall, put I don't think his numbers on offense are good enough. Plus, he was unfortunate to have played at the same time as Mazeroski.
I have two questions, please.
1.) Which was the better double-play combo: Javier and Dal Maxvill, or Ozzie Smith and Tommy Herr?
2.) Which was the better infield: the 1964 All-Star infield of Bill White, Javier, Dick Groat, and Ken Boyer; or, last year's Goldschmidt, Edman, DeJong, and Arenado?
Thank you. -
You're welcome. Tough call on the first one. The game was a different game on turf, which Ozzie and Tom Herr had. Both duos were terrific. I would give the 1964 infield an edge on offense and last year's club a slight edge on defense. DeJong, I think, was a better defender than Groat. But Groat also was a much better hitter than DeJong. That's the swing vote.

Morning, sir...
Sheesh, Cards sure made several no-name pitchers for the Cubs look like aces. Is it that there was no "book" on those guys or are they highly rated up-and-comers? Scouts must have a book on these guys?
Also, I cannot recall one player popping out as much as Arenado has over the last several weeks. Any thoughts on what he is doing? Dropping his shoulder? Lunging at the ball? Hasn't looked like himself at all...but the prolific pop-outs are maddening. He must be going crazy trying to get it sorted out.
Finally, on a positive note...these rookies have been a revelation, eh? Fun to watch, enthusiastic, seemingly fearless. Infectious to watch. I am enjoying them tremendously. -
Yes, the kids are all right. Teams often have trouble with pitchers they haven't seen no matter how many reports they read or videos they watch. I'm not concerned about Arenado. He's actually stuck in a few run-scoring singles lately, such as last night, and he has been much better lately than he was in May.

You can't release players while they are on the injured list. But Dickerson may stay on the injured list for a while until the Cardinals figure out what to do with him. He did homer twice in his last previous game, you know, albeit one of those was off a first baseman.

Tony is signed for next year, too, and the White Sox just came off a big series win in Tampa Bay. The White Sox have had a rash of injuries and shortstop Tim Anderson, their best player, is out now. Chicago isn't pulling any triggers yet and the Twins are very catchable in that division.

Hi
I’m unclear as to what rules apply to the selection of what players are eligible to be the Free runner at second base in extra innings.
I was quite surprised to see Gorman there in the 11 inning yesterday.
Would you please explain the rules and your opinion of Gorman selection over day Bader or Edmond.
Thanks for the opportunity to talk baseball!! -

Brendan Donovan is one of the pleasant surprises of the season for the Cardinals. He played at four positions in the Chicago series and contributed both in the field with his arm and at bat with many clutch hits. The key for manager Marmol is how to use him when O'Neill and Carlson are back this week.Three of five from anybody is a good series. That's 60 percent--on the road. The Cubs aren't that bad.

-
Mo and Girsch will be happy to read these sentiments. That was a fun series in Chicago. Considering that the Cardinals had to pull out two of their three wins in the series in extra innings and had to ride their top relievers hard in the final two games, it was a successful weekend.
-
If O’Neil and Carlson come back and are producing, wouldn’t Donavan playing 2nd base most games and having Yepez and Gorman the designated hitters? This will not be very popular with Albert fans but he is hitting 200, and Dickerson needs to go. Defense wise this would be their best starting lineup,Your thoughts.
-
Donovan has to play somewhere almost every day. I wouldn't take Gorman off second base to create space for Donovan, though, but I would give Yepez the majority of the at-bats as the DH over Pujols. It seems something always happens to solve these dilemmas but it is a good one to have for Oli Marmol. And DeJong is beginning to produce at Memphis. You can't leave him down there all season either.

Wittgren has been all right, especially lately and he's the most durable of the Cardinals' relievers. McFarland has been better, too, although he hasn't had a good season. He will have to show more, especially with Thompson now here as a possible left-handed starter/reliever.
-
This Chicago series did not convince me that this team can compete with the Mets or Dodgers. The Brewers were blessed with a soft schedule for the first two months and this might catch up to them. This division is so weak, the Cards just might back into at least a wild card spot unless they can get at least one legitimate starter and another power bat for DH/outfield
-
There is little doubt in my mind that the Cardinals are a playoff team and a potential division winner. Flaherty is on the way back and you won't get a more legitimate starter than he if he stays healthy. It looks to me as if the Cardinals have plenty of outfield/DH candidates with Yepez a strong likelihood to get more DH at-bats with O'Neill and Carlson in the field. .
-
Other than Goldy, you could make a case for Donovan as the team MVP so far. He's a gamer. My question is, when O'Neill and Carlson return, who goes down? And DeJong is hitting well enough at AAA, is he about to get recalled? Who goes down then? It's a nice problem to have.

Good morning Commish! Is any of the young pitchers winning the 5th starter spot before the return of Flaherty? The cards recently audited Liberatore, Thompson, Oviedo, Woodford, and Pallante. My pick is Pallante. And will the cards part ways with Dickerson when Carlson and O'Neil are back?

On MLB today a national baseball writer, whose name I don’t recall, was discussing possible suitors for Madison Bumgarner. He specifically mentioned the Cardinals. Bumgarner is signed through ‘24. How would you gauge the team’s interest? And how many players/prospects would be required by Arizona to make that deal?

First, thank you for the chats. They are great and enjoyable. Second, I have a problem with MLB. I do not like when they change the rules of the game. I am referring to the "Ghost Runner" in extra innings. How did he get there? Was it a hit? Walk? How do we score that? And they say the game is too long. A survey found that TV takes up almost 1 hr of a game! We will not stop that, that is money. Can't have both. What should we do?
Ron -
And. . . thank you. I don't like the "ghost" runner either. His presence on second base is considered as an error or unearned run if he scores although no player is charged with that error. So one of the Cardinals' runs in extra innings each of the last two nights was an unearned run.

Thank you for doing this. I am so pleased how well the Cardinals have hung in there in spite of all of their injuries and look to be pretty strong when all get healthy (still minus another stud starter). When O'Neil and Carlson comes back - who goes down in your opinion and what is your batting order?
-
As mentioned, Nootbaar is the most likely immediate casualty with Dickerson next when he is deemed healthy. The batting order when all the players are back might go something like this: Edman, Gorman, Goldschmidt, Arenado, Carlson, Yepez/Donovan, Molina, O'Neill, Bader.
-
There was a report on mlb network this morning that the cardinals are interested in acquiring Madison bumgarner. Have you heard anything about that and can you see the cards making that move? He’s still owed a lot of money so I’d guess the dbacks would have to eat some of that contract.
