Rick, I’m curious what you think happens if and when it become clear that Pujols isn’t one of the 26 best players on the club. So far, injuries have kept the Cards from having to make that sort of tough decision, but it’s not hard to imagine the team at some point might have to option someone like Yepez even though he’s hitting much better than Pujols.
-
We'll take these last two at once. They are related. I'm guessing that Dickerson will be moved once he finishes his rebab but he did feel some discomfort in his calf over the weekend so this may be a while. Albert is not going anywhere unless he elects to retire. I agree that his presence here---and that of Dickerson, too--clouds the DH situation but, Albert is staying. Manager Marmol just has to be more careful of when to use him.

We always hear that the Cards reach out to other teams about possible trades but it seems like all they do is ask “what do you want?” And then tell fans the price was too high. Other teams get deals done for players Cards targeted without giving up top prospects. Why are the Cards unable to effectively negotiate trades? This seems to be the most glaring problem limiting the team’s success in the postseason.

For posterity, here's the ERA of the pitchers mentioned in this forum over the past month as " not too bad or last outing was better ".
7.43 McFarland - 1yr/2.5mil
6.03 Matz - 4yr/44mil ( This is the one that is causing the most damage. If only anyone knew or had access to his injury history ) SMH
5.98 Verhagen - 2yrs/5.5 mil
5.68 Whitley - MLB min
5.40 Naughton - MLB min ( in 22 inn last year with the Angels he had a 6.35 ERA. MO found lightning in a bottle)
5.40 Wittgren - 1yr/1.2mil
5.02 Hicks - MLB min
In industry or sport, that's called unsatisfactory. Had you spent the reliever money here on FA with some history of high leverage situations, you could get that guy for 6-9 mil/yr and you prolly would have 4-6 more wins. -
ERAs aren't the only stats you use for pitchers, especially relievers. I still contend that because of Wittgren's ability to pitch on consecutive days, he is of more value than most of the rest. I didn't say he was having a good season, just that he can help you more.

Has anyone broken down our team hitting stats with RISP in close games versus with multiple run leads? I know overall, our avg with RISP is well above League average, but all I ever see is that when we have a 3 or 4 run lead, we pile on 5 more runs and inflate those stats. And when we’re down one, we seem to go 1 for 11 with RISP every time. Are there stats to back up these observations and are there adjustments we need to be making to situational hitting in more pressure packed, closer games?

Under the new playoff format, the 2 division winners with the best records get a bye while the one with the fewest wins hosts a 3 game wild card game. Based on current standings the Cards are likely to end up in a wild card series against a team that could have a much better record if we manage to hold off the Brewers. Therefore winning the Central shouldn’t be the stated goal of the FO. Management needs to do more to position the team for success in the postseason. Getting some bullpen help for middle innings would be great!

I’m wondering why everyone keeps talking about going out and getting a “mid line starter” - with Liberatore, Pallante, and likely soon Matz, we cant possibly need any more “innings eaters.” Commish, don’t you think the move(s) to make are to go find undervalued bullpen help like what Garcia and McFarland were for us last year? Anyone you’ve heard they have an eye on? Are there “rehab” projects like Daniel Hudson or Drew Pomeranz from a few years ago who were bargain basement deals that teams converted into highly successful high leverage relievers?
-
The Cardinals did have some success in lower-tiered pitchers they traded for or signed into the season last year. It would have been great, for instance, if Garcia had stayed instead of going to San Diego. That ilk of pitcher is likely out there but names don't jump into my head yet.
-
I am as unhappy with the moves that MO made regarding the bullpen as the next fan. But before the season, you have to think that the Cardinals felt with the big three plus, Whitley, Hicks and Reyes this could be a dominant bullpen. Whitley who pitched decently last year has just lost his command. Hicks and Reyes are tragedies given their talent and injury history. The Orioles have an all world bullpen with some young guys. How much should the Cards be willing to pay to see if they could get one of those guys? Free Rondon.

It seems like it's one injury after another with O'Neill in his time with the Cardinals. Have the Cardinals addressed his emphasis on weight lifting as a issue with him being injury plagued? It seems to be similar to the injury issues that Matt Holiday incurred who also was a big advocate of lifting.
-
Leg injuries happen all the time. O'Neill's most recent injury had to do with his shoulder, which I don't think was related to weight lifting. But his injury history hasn't been a good one, especially bad timing because his good hitting approach seemed to have returned.
-
Why does MO pinch pennies when going for Bench players/Relief Pitchers? For a little more than he paid VerHagen, he could have kept Luis Garcia. For a little more than he paid Dickerson, he could have signed Pederson. Ironically, when he releases them both, and acquires their replacements, he will have paid more than he would have had he just paid the piper in the first place! You get what you pay for!

The Brewers actually made their best move early in the season last year, acquiring Willy Adames from Tampa Bay. Milwaukee seems have done better in the lower-tiered acquisitions of players, notably in season, but the Brewers haven't brought in any Arenados and Goldschmidts in the off-season.

Follow on to the previous comment---wouldn't last year, when Lester and Happ saved the season, suggest there is an advantage by zigging(and grabbing the guys who get outs) while everyone else zags (grabbing stuff guys)?
Also, just a question---My perception is Ollie is using relievers for longer average stints then did Shildt? a little more old school? Thoughts?
