Hey Rick: We know the Upms are responsible for putting the old Mississippi mud on the baseballs. But who really does it i.e. clubhouse attendee, etc.? Also, since a lot a pitchers complain about the 'slick' balls why aren't Umps being held responsible for it? Of course we know Umps aren't really held responsible for anything anymore

I saw a video where instead of automated strike zone the minor leagues are using a three challenge per game to strike or ball call. Only the pitcher, catcher or batter can challenge and they must do it instantly after pitch is made, the umpire turns around and looks at person watching automated strike and signals strike or ball. This whole process took about 15 seconds, and each team gets 3 challenges per game, but keep there challenges as they win the challenge. The beauty of this is it is so fast and does not slow down the game, and the umpire still calls the balls and strikes, your thoughts.

I would like to see this experimented with in spring training before I would pass judgment but it is intriguing. I don't want to lose the human element of the home-plate umpire, though. I like on-field arguments and balls and strikes are about the only things you really can debate these days.

Mr. Hummel, thank you for the chat and for taking my thoughts. I understand that umpiring is a very difficult job ( ex umpire here) but the current set of umps seem to actually, well, to put it mildly....Suck. I have never seen such bad umping. That is just my opinion, Secondly, if the season ended today who would we meet in the playoffs?

At the beginning of the season the Cardinals were built around defense and ground ball pitchers.
Recently our starting lineup has lessened our defense at SS 2B LF and CF.
I know the team has to score runs but it seems to me that we’ve abandoned our core strength.
What say you??

Helsley was granted permission to be away until tests were concluded on their infant daughter. Nothing wrong with her, thankfully. And Cardinals didn't lose any games because Helsley was gone. Nobody is upset, similar to when Molina took off and when Goldschmidt and Arenado weren't allowed to go to Toronto because they weren't vaccinated for COVID.

It seems to me that Tyler doesn’t look the same in the field this year. He sometimes lacks hustle to get to balls and I can’t remember the last time I have seen him dive for a ball like Noot and Bader did. Even with his starts in center you would think with his speed he could get to some balls by diving or going all out.
-
O'Neill, who hadn't played center field since 2019 in the minors, has seemed slow to react on some balls, especially those hit in front of him, when he's been in center. The angles are totally different than playing corner outfield. You might see him the rest of the way mostly in left, where he is outstanding, and Carlson in center with Dickerson, as long he stays hot, taking some time in left. But Carlson will have to hit better for this to work. The Cardinals can't have outs at catcher, shortstop (DeJong) and center field at the same time.

Been kind of a crazy month for Dylan Carlson.... from not willing to include him in Soto trade and being designated as the CF of the future, to barely playing. Kudos to Marmol for not forcing a narrative and putting the day to day needs of the team first. But what a turn of events, and maybe a reminder that getting a proven high end player outweighs the risk of trading young, but still unproven players?

I see with 34 games left both Waino and Pujols have career 93's at the end of their respective career victory and home run tallies. Clearly with only 7 starts remaining for Adam his chances now are outright near impossible for 200 this year. But how about Albert odds of still getting to 700 by season's end?

Looking ahead to the playoffs would you consider Donavan at LO everyday and then move Goldschmidt and Areanado to 2/3 and then LH Nootbaar to 4 to cover them? Right now you don't change success w Noot leading off but doesn't he project w more power than Dickerson and Carlson who isn't hitting LH at all? I'm sure the hope is O'Neill can return to late last season form but that elusive LH middle of the order bat may be right under Marmol's nose? Great OB at LO. Best two hitters at 2/3. then best LH w power at 4? Maybe best chance vs top RH pitchers facing teams in October?
-
I see your point but Marmol isn't going to mess with Nootbaar and Donovan as the Nos. 1-2 hitters until they aren't getting on any more. He's been searching for the right combination against right-handed pitching all season and now he may have found it. And, the Cardinals almost never face left-handed starters.

In a short series, the Cardinals would have the most trouble against teams that have two top-shelf starters. The team with the best top two is New York with Scherzer and deGrom. Next are Philadelphia with Wheeler (currently injured) and Nola and Milwaukee with Burnes and Woodruff. The Dodgers have several good starters, but those aforementioned teams have the top twosomes.

Donovan could be a much better version of Descalso because he has more speed, more power, hit for a higher average and achieve a higher on-base percentage, where Donovan ranks among the top players in the league. I don't see him "selling out" because his main job now is to get on base for the big boys.

Dejongs had a couple of walks lately which is a good sign for him. Do you think he'll recover and be anything more than a late game defensive replacement this season? Is he a classic case of needing a change of scenery to have a chance at being an everyday player? I know he's making good money but don't you ache as he struggles being so talented and seemingly such a good person and teammate?

Hi Rick. I presume that Ollie’s constant juggling of the line up to maximize match ups (R v L) is what Schildt refused to do? Also, I believe it’s finally time for the FO to go all-in this Winter. The Redbirds have gone a long time without the likes of an Arenado/Goldschmidt base and it would be criminal not to surround them with the necessary pieces to be a ‘true’ WS contender. Your thoughts?

Carlson exited the trade deadline drama with a big HR and created a "this is why Mo kept him" moment. Since then he has 3 extra base hits in 75 ABs and he can't hit RH pitching. I'm not suggesting Oli banish him to the bench for eternity but can this team keep telling fans "we just have to get him going..."? It's almost September 1st.
