One that has an upside prospect, perhaps one at the Class AA level, or lower, and highly ranked, but not highest rank. A major-league player who has five, six years of control remaining, so that the A's get a player at another position who will be cost-controlled but part of of the team. And then a contributing pitcher. That seems to be the framework of a deal, but my ears are open to more details on what this would look like for the A's.

Comment and a question:
Good comparison for Wheeler (who was pitching well and dominant in my opinion) pitching change that blew up on Phillies was AJ Hinch pulling Zack Greinke when he was in command and had like a 2 or 3 hitter vs. Nats late in G6 I believe. Reliever comes in and gives up bomb. Astros lose game and series (eventually - in G7). Similar situation and outcome in the same general venue.
Question:
Do you think the Halos are open for business re: Trout and Ohtani - especially given the fact that the team is on the market and needs a number of things to be competitive going forward? Hard to see them competing even for the expanded playoffs - especially given their league and division competition.
Thanks - enjoy your work very much. -
Thanks for the kind words. I do not think the Angels are open for business for trades of their best players. Discussed earlier in the trade and then confirmed, on the record, to reporters later in the day by the Angels GM. They are not motivated sellers. They are being sold as an team, and that ahs been considered as part of that factor. They are not eager sellers or even sellers at all at the moment. Does that change in July? Sure. Maybe. We'll see. Angels aren't a terrible team. They just actually need to commit to pitching beyond Ohtani.

Did Mo put the team in a bad position by saying they'd raise payroll? Doing so means signing at least one big piece, something that's always been beyond the puke point. These pieces are a top SP (Rodon or even Verlander or deGrom) or a top SS (namely Turner but Xander or Correa or even Swanson) or a C (overpaying on Contreras or Vazquez). The OF bat isn't obvious, assuming Nimmo isn't a piece. That's just 8 names, and that's 8 types of contracts they have never once won. Thoughts?
-
No. He should acknowledge the obvious and also let fans know they're going to raise payroll after two years of not doing so during a period when, several years ago, they said would see a rise in payroll. He's not going to deny the obvious. If he didn't say, we'd still write it. Because it's true.

Everyone said Nolan Gorman was going to adjust to major league pitching. He didnt play the last month of the season because he couldn't catch up to a MLB fastball. Are your sure you want to count on these young guys while Goldscmidt and Arenado continue to carry this team....they;re not going to be around forever

Derrick, I really appreciated your article about Christian Vazquez, who is certainly worth consideration. However, do you think the Cardinals might look at an "out-of-the-box" idea with an unexpected trade, maybe a current catcher who is proven (and not named Murphy or Jansen) or a near-ready top prospect? Just throwing a name out there...Will Smith. Thanks for the great chat during your busy time lately.

I get allure of the Oakland catcher (Murphy), but there are free agent options available that wouldn't cost any prospects. What about Josh Bell? I know he tailed off after the trade from the Nationals, but he's a left-handed bat the Cards need, and obviously would be mainly DH here, but could fill in for Goldschmidt when needs a rest day.
