I will have a story posted soon enough, but John A. Logan College coach Kyle Smithpeters has formally signed a contract to become an assistant coach under Dennis Gates, per a source. That completes the coaching staff: C.Y. Young, Dickey Nutt and Smithpeters. There are other staff positions to fill, some of which have already been filled but not formally announced. -

Three clear differences: Martin was the veteran coach on his staff. His assistants did't have Division I head-coaching experience. And he had never worked with his first three assistants. (His longtime friend Marco Harris later replaced Michael Porter Sr.)On Gates' staff, he's got two elder statesmen in Young and Dickey who have a combined 62 years of college coaching experience with three different stops as head coaches. Also, Gates has worked with Young and Nutt at Florida State. I think that gives this staff an advantage in that they don't need to spend the summer or a full season getting to know each other or how they operate.

I think the transfer craze that is making off-season so much more interesting in college sports will become more predictable in a few more years. The fact that an athlete can only transfer once without sitting out a season will slow down the jumping 2 or 3 times in a career. It will become once for an underclassman (usually 1 - 2 years in) and then maybe again post graduation. Do you see something similar? Will the NCAA give a student a maximum # of games played to avoid losing the red-shirt season in BBall?

Well, if their head coach gets fired they'll likely get a waiver to transfer a second or third time, which is why you're seeing so many players leaving teams after coaching changes.I'm not sure if the NCAA will do anything to curb the transferring. The only thing that will compel the NCAA to enact any changes is if the sport(s) and/or the programs are losing money due to the transfers. And there's no indication that's the case. Otherwise, what incentive does the NCAA have to change the current system?

Okay, so Smithpeters is in the fold as the third assistant. Let's assume Jamarion Sharp also comes along with (I think) two years of eligibility left. Not saying they will be great, but with another true big man this roster suddenly looks like a legit basketball team that was actually put together with a plan - not one that was just thrown together on the fly, like it seems it was. Am I on the right track in your opinion, or am I wearing black-and-gold-colored glasses?

I'd pump the brakes a bit before deciding this team will be in the 2023 NCAA tourney. As comprised right now you've got two players who have played multiple seasons for a high-major team: Kobe Brown and Nick Honor. It's another major chemistry experience with at least eight newcomers, maybe more. It's just really hard to have any idea how a roster with so many new pieces will come together - and that's basically the case for every team in the conference.

I like teams with interesting, thoughtful personalities who are accessible, no matter if they win or lose. That 2013 football team had lots of good talkers who genuinely enjoyed talking to reporters: Mitch Morse and Markus Golden were the gold standard. Then guys like Max Copeland, L'Damian Washington, Kentrell Brothers, James Franklin. All good guys who were also interesting.Least favorite? I don't like to name names for questions like that. Not everybody enjoys interacting with the media. That's OK. I'd rather focus on the guys I enjoyed covering.

I put the Moore-Brown tandem in pretty rarefied air when you talk about the first half of that 2008 season before Brown got hurt. Moore was an all-time great at Mizzou. Brown had one of the best half-seasons of any defensive player in team history. Both were elite playmakers. I wouldn't put this current group in that class yet. Manuel is around the ball a lot. He also misses his share of tackles. Same for Carlies. Charleston was impressive in the spring game - but that was a practice game. I do like this group's upside. But that's a high bar when you're comparing the 2008 secondary.
