Good afternoon Dave, and hope all is well your way. Question regarding the Softball team--they're currently 1 game under .500 in the SEC standings with 6 SEC games to go in the season. Do you think they have to finish at least over .500 in conference play to have a shot to host a regional?
-
I would think they'd have to win both of these two series to have any shot at hosting a regional. Right now Mizzou's RPI is No. 23. They have remaining series against Texas A&M (No. 35) and at Alabama (No. 4). Only 16 teams host regionals, so it might be too steep of a hill to climb to earn a chance to host.

They can most likely get an NCAA waiver to play right away because their coach was fired. Initially I didn't expect as many second-time transfers to enter the portal, but clearly players don't expect to have to sit out. Keep in mind, Mizzou has added some players who have already transferred: Nick Honor and DeAndre Gholston have already transferred from other Division I programs and sat out once already.

Is Mizzou football really in the "Beggars can't be choosers" camp? I mean have things slipped enough since Gary Pinkel that we must settle for potential QB recruits who might play another sport? Obviously most of the big programs do not have this issue. It leaves fans, I think, wondering whether or not HCED is the guy for this program. How is it that we have to worry about it? Why does Mizzou have to either settle for two guys who could not beat out the other guy last year OR a FRESHMAN who might have something better to do? I am certain when Drink was hired it was with the thought that he was an offensive coach who QB's would want to play for? Where oh where was Josh Heupel at the time??? Your thoughts Dave? I still think Emory Jones is a better choice given experience to get through this coming season, but I know you disagree with that sentiment. But goodness, has Mizzou fallen so far?

The quarterback situation is going to have a major impact on how Drinkwitz's tenure is measured. He has to get that position figured out in the short-term and in the long term. Though planning for the future in college football isn't what it used to be in the age of the portal and one-time transfer waivers. I wouldn't put Sam Horn on a professional pitching mound just yet. A lot has to happen for him to decide that's his better option. But this was always a risk.

We touched on this earlier, but they're probably going to have to go on the road for regional play. They seem to be peaking at the right time. The pitching has been more consistent. The lineup is putting together some solid weeks. Kim Wert is making a push for All-SEC honors. Still, the offense is pretty much all or nothing. They hit a lot of home runs but strike out a lot and rank last in the SEC in on-base percentage.
