Football comes first. When he's not practicing for football, meeting for football, training for football ... he'll have time for baseball. College baseball is essentially year-round - and Horn wasn't with the baseball team during their fall scrimmages/practices. So, I can't imagine Steve Bieser is counting on him being a major part of the 2023 team.

Hi Dave,
That was a crazy game last night. Does Mizzou release their financials, regarding profit/loss per sport or just the athletic department in general? I know generally the Olympic sports are money drains, but curious if Mizzou runs their non-revenue sports leaner than others. -

I'd like to comment on the WBB team. Fans can clamor all they want for a "big" for HCRP to recruit, but the reality is true athletic posts in the 6-4 to 6-7 range are far and few in between. The blue blood programs are there to snatch them up and to be honest, schools like Mizzou have to have a large NIL to attract such players. I'll take the SR Smith and Haley Franks over the non-athletic bigs any day..

It's not just about record. NET ranking will be critical. Can't have bad losses. Probably can't lose at home to South Carolina and Ole Miss. But a huge win over someone like Tennessee or Alabama might be able to make up for a bad loss.Six more wins gives you 20 and a .500 record in SEC play. Is that enough? Might be cutting it close.

In the new soap opera As The Wide Receiver Revolving Door TUrns, does the addition of Theo Wease and Dannis Jackson make the Tigers WR corps whole after the defection of Dominic Lovett to Georgia. Lovett was second team all SEC. i understand Jackson was a 4 star recruit. Apparently he isn’t getting playing time at Ole Miss. i know nothing about Wease. Looks like the national championship contenders like Georgia, Alabama, LSU etal are filling their rosters will players they didn’t originally fit in their plans. Are coaches allowed to contact players who have not entered the transfer portal to tell them there is a spot for them their roster? Mizzou lost Wingo to LSU. Wingo seems like a player they would have wanted to hang onto. Didn’t Mookie Cooper transfer from Ohio St to Mizzou apparently becaue he wasn’t getting playing time atOSU?

Wease is a far more accomplished college player than Jackson. I can't imagine Mizzou has interest in Jackson were it not for his connection to receivers coach Jacob Peeler. I'm not sure the position has been upgraded. Lovett had a better 2022 season than anything Wease or Jackson have done in college. No, coaches are not allowed to contact players about transferring before they enter the portal. But it would be naive to assume that doesn't happen all over the place.

You mentioned that the Mizzou athletic department reads these chats, so…
Dear Mizzou Athletic Department,
How about showing the press some love and getting them a better place to observe the game? Their importance in building and maintaining the fan base is huge. Plus you have one of the top three Journalism programs in the country – seems weird you wouldn’t recognize the importance of giving them a great place to do their job. -
Most colleges have shifted their press rows to the upper corners of their arena - away from the prime seating locations where you can charge top dollar to sit. I get it. Toothpaste is out of the tube on that front. It makes me appreciate the schools that still put the media on the floor. Wichita State puts media on the floor. Mississippi State still did as of a few years ago, but I believe they've shipped reporters up closer to the rafters. Mizzou Arena's media section probably has the worst angle of any media seating in the SEC. Most others at least put us along a baseline or in a corner where we have a direct view of both ends of the floor. Honestly, it's a big reason more media don't travel to road games. These days very few reporters travel to road games in the SEC. The Arkansas reporters didn't even make the trip to Columbia last night. I still like traveling to road games for basketball, but with the cost of travel and shrinking budgets - and the convenience of Zoom for postgame interviews - I understand why most reporters watch from home.I'll be at Tuesday's game at Ole Miss and plan to attend MU's games at Tennessee and Auburn.

I'd say we're still in the feeling-out process. He's friendly and very polished when it comes to addressing the media, but there's not a lot of space for personal interactions yet. I like him but I can't say I know him. Pinkel was that way early, but he let his guard down eventually. I got to know Cuonzo well from the start and had/have a good relationship with him. We talked often away from the games/press conferences about far more topics than basketball. I had a good rapport with Odom, good with Drinkwitz, too.

That's pretty much college basketball in any conference. Win your home games, pluck off a few on the road. Mizzou still has three very tough SEC games: Saturday vs. Bama, at Tennessee, at Auburn. The three-game stretch against South Carolina-LSU-Miss State is manageable as are the final two weeks of the regular season.

I'm not reporting on rumors or anonymously sourced dollar figures. If folks are willing to share what they're making with documented evidence - like we do when we report on coaches' salaries - then I'd be happy to report those numbers. But that's not reality with NIL. We can't even ask the players about their NIL deals during team-organized media sessions. They can't discuss their contracts/endorsements while on university time.

I'd be surprised if he's allowed to do interviews this season, so no telling if his situation will ever be discussed on the record. He can do things on the offensive end that other players can't do at this level. He's very good at creating space against a defender and creating his own shot. It does't always come within the structure of the offense, but that's OK sometimes when you need a bucket. And in the halfcourt, this team has plenty of chances when it just needs someone to find a bucket. He seems to play in slow motion sometimes and could play with a little more urgency on defense - but that's just my non-expert observation.

I think Mosley will hit some 3s once he gets more acclimated into the rotations. Hodge probably isn't as good of a shooter as he was the first couple months of the season - and probably isn't as bad as he's been lately. Somewhere in the middle would be a welcome change.

Gomillion came out last night in the first half because of fouls, not just because Mosley played. He seems to play more or less based more on matchups and whether Gates wants to go with four guards. He's still a good defender and valuable floor leader. He can still have an impact on games playing 10-15 minutes instead of 20.I'll be interested to see what happens to the bigs when Carter comes back. If they're that high on Diarra, I imagine that will cut into DeGray's minutes. But two weeks ago they were raving about DeGray. It'll still come down to who's playing/practicing well. I think we've learned from Gates so far that roles can fluctuate from one week to the next.
