Do roosters still expand on or around September 1st? If so, why not try to slow play Dickerson. For example, engage him to entertain going on an 3 week "extended" rehab of sorts if and when he heals up. And even if an injury by somebody else does not materialize by September he still figures to be in better shape to contribute for even a late July or August return. Plus his money is spent no matter what the team does here.

Teams can go from 26 to 28 players in the last month of the season. The Cardinals wouldn't be able to "hide" Dickerson that long. Those minor league rehabs are only 20 days for position players. And he's not far from going on one now. What do you do the other two months until Sept. 1? I would like to keep him around, but I don't see how it happens.

Help me understand why Flahrety is starting in Memphis Wednesday and not St. Louis? They say they don’t want him to get hurt but won’t throwing 75 pitches in Memphis be just as harmful as 75 in Busch? The way he’s pitched his first two rehab starts seems like you’d want him in St. Louis even if he is on a strict pitch count.

Commish: Took in an International League game recently and the pitcher has 15 seconds to make his pitch with no one on base, 20 seconds with a runner on. So that rule definitely speeds up what the pitcher is doing. But I don't think games will get to 2.5 hours (except on get-a-way) day because batters look at so many pitches. Apparently the data is not available but it would be interesting to compare the number of pitches thrown in a game in the 1950's and 60's compared to today. An earlier chatter took offense to Yadi swinging at the first pitch. In Don Larsen's perfect game 4 or 5 Dodgers swung at the first pitch. I doubt if those batters were excoriated in the papers the next day. Back then it must have been OK to swing at a ripe pitch over the plate. Now batters take that pitch to work the count. Your comments?

The philosophy in those days was to swing at the first good pitch you saw because you might not see a better one. I'm astonished how many hitters go the plate and take the first pitch, no matter where it is, because that's what they had in their minds when they got to the plate.

I thought that Knizner hit pretty well to start the year, when he was getting more playing time due to Yadi not being ready yet. I have the impression that as his playing time has gone down, his hitting has gone down also. Is this correct, or am I misremembering it?

Looks like Woodford had a strong outing in Memphis on Saturday. Does he get any chance to play again for the Cards? Or is he just SOL... even though he has done better than many of the current roster pitchers: McFad, Witt, Whitley, Ovi, Van, LIbby, Naugt, Matz.. this is a really long list.
