As much as the Cardinals say they’re trying to be more transparent this doesn’t seem to hold for injuries. A player can struggle for weeks or months and then much later it’s revealed that he’s been dealing with an injury like Carlson’s thumb. Why isn’t the team more upfront and timely with disclosing this information? I realize players often play with some level of discomfort or pain but it still seems the manager could clue fans in a bit more.

Or maybe, stay with me here, I should have been better at asking about it. This one could be my fault. I could have asked a better question, and I know when I could have asked it, and I know how I messed it up. And I don't have a sprained thumb to blame for my whiff.

Derrick, how does this season rank (so far) on your years covered? There is a lot of things happening like Pujols, Yadi/Pujols last seasons, co-MVP, Triple Crown race, etc. on top of the normal season storylines. It seems like this season is giving you a lot of stories to write about!

We see it. There have been some players who throw it. Montas throws one. Walker throws one. I saw one that was really good here recently and just cannot remember the game I was watching when I did. They're out there. Cardinals have had a few relievers over the past decade or so who threw one.

My question is about you. I've often felt that as a beat write you rightly withhold your opinions. I also feel you do that in these chats where I would think you have more freedom to voice opinions. Your BPIB is loaded with opinions that make you more relatable to the listener. IMO What is your take

A couple of thoughts. And they're worth repeating every so often here in the chat. In the chat, because of the forum here, I take questions as if you're asking me for my reporting unless you say otherwise. When someone asks "why does this ....", to me that's asking for my reporting on why the team does this, otherwise they would phrase it, "Why do you think ..." You come to the chat for answers about the Cardinals, and I do my best to provide the information that my reporting provides and hope that readers see the different between explaining an answer and advocating an answer. Those are not the same thing. On the podcast, it's a conversation and you know that I'm hosting it as me. The questions being asked of me by the guests or topics presented by me, are coming from me. I'm not responding to a reader asking a question about the team. That said, in both cases that same standards apply.1) I have to be able to prove, with my reporting or research, any assertion I make. Merely standing on my opinion is not my role. Presenting a thesis and analysis and proving it is definitely my role.2) I am accountable for the facts, reporting, or opinion presented, and it is important that I make it clear to readers/listeners when that's the case. As I will now. This is how I see the role, having learned from some of the best what the role of beat writer can be.

Alright, it's time to pivot to some other typing for the day. Thanks for spending the day here with me at StlToday and for the wide-ranging topics and question. Never quite know where the chat is going to take us, but for some odd reason it became debatable that a team would carry a defensive specialist on the bench in the postseason. What in the name of Nick Punto would make that a question?Oh well. The last multi-series home stand of the season starts Tuesday with a visit from the second-place Milwaukee Brewers. It's Part 1 of the Brewers' Last Stand. And history could happen at any moment this week. Pujols is three swings away from 700, and the Cardinals have seven games in six days at Busch Stadium. He'll get the starts to give him a shot. And then the Cardinals head west for the road trip that a few weeks ago sure seemed like it might define their season and determine if they were in the hunt for the division. Still good. But their lead is sturdy for the moment. The chat will be back next Monday. I'll be on a flight, probably. Hummel will be at the keyboard.Stay tuned to StlToday.com for even more coverage in the coming weeks as we expand the amount of things we're working on to meet the moment.
