Contreras was not in the 2022 lineup. So, I'm not sure ... what to say here. Yes, since signing Contreras, they have not made a move or really been linked to any move -- though they have had some talks with a few of the pitchers who signed and didn't like what the Cardinals had to offer.

Derrick,
Spring Training should be interesting this year. Who will be our starting OF'ers. Carlson is a given, but Nootbaar & O'Neill have to see Walker in the wings. Can Gorman reclaim his spot and who will win the DH/UT job which Donovan was great at in 22? Will any of our young pitching prospect step forward? Lots of questions.... -

The Marlins are still entertaining talks on him, yes. But he doesn't seem to be moving. There were several teams with interest in him, and that group included Minnesota, Boston, and there was a time when it appeared this past year that the Dodgers were about to making a deal for him. That didn't happen obviously. The Cardinals have had had some interest, and from the Marlins side there appears to be an interest in matching up with the Cardinals. But at least check, the Cardinals were not aggressive in their pursuit of him and they were aware there were other suitors who could make that move.

There are members of the Cardinals' decision tree that think Drew VerHagen could be a factor for the team in a swing/start role and that his physical limitations kept him from making that stride. Remember they were hours away from naming him the fifth start last spring. Hours. Seriously. They almost did that morning. They wanted to.

Then the correction he made and the flaw he found were not the reason, and he'll do what he did before -- which was the opposite of ignoring the issue, clearly. So, no head in the sand. Do you think that's been his style in almost 20 years of this? The Cardinals will need more than six wins against the Pirates and Reds in 2023 to win the division. That won't be near enough.

What are your thoughts about Chris Sale as a potential trade target? When healthy he is still an excellent pitcher, one who induces the desired swing and miss. Though he has been oft-injured, the injuries all seem a bit random, and the Cardinals may be well positioned, depth-wise if he is out for a period of time.

I am not. I have seen a lot of the Twilight Zone through the years, but my knowledge of it off the cuff is mostly related to the author of the famous Nightmare at 20,000 Feet episode (and more than a dozen others, I believe). That was Richard Matheson. He also wrote I Am Legend. And he's a Mizzou grad.

The Cardinals could have had Dansby Swanson. They have money. What excuses are they going to come up with now, especially with Pujols, Molina and soon to be Waino off the books. Are they just going to go with home grown talent and hope they become major league difference makers?
-
Their reason is as obvious as you want to make it. They didn't want to spend that for Swanson, or they didn't want to spend on Swanson and Contreras. That's not an excuse. That's their reason. That's their choice. They made that choice. And you can disagree with it, and be critical of it, and that's entirely fair. They are not just going to go with homegrown talent because they signed Contreras, and their lineup is built around two players they traded for.

Happy New Year, DG. I've not been to London before but have my tickets for a game in June. What part of the city would you suggest for a first-timer to stay? I plan to be there for at least a week before heading on to either Dublin or Paris so the location doesn't have to exclusively be close to the stadium. What other "must sees" should I put on my list?
-
The Underground makes so much of the city accessible no matter where you stay. You cannot go wrong staying somewhere close to Trafalgar or Piccadilly. Both give you access to the museums by walking, a pleasant hike to St. Paul's and the Tate -- or swift access to a tube line that goes all over. If you want a whirlwind outside your window stay near Piccadilly or Leicester and the theater district.

Right around the Turner contract being signed as payrolls began to skyrocket Mo said “our model will be tested.” The 1-9 record in their last 10 playoff games and three straight Wild Card exits with a fledgling offense wasn’t hinting at a lack of “randomness” and a need to tweak the model?

Nootbaar seems to be having considerable success from working with Driveline. (1) How does the team feel about its players working with independent coaches and trainers, (2) how similar are the tech-heavy techniques at Driveline to the Cards' hitting instruction, and (3) why aren't more players doing this? Seems like Gorman has potential greatness in him, but he just needs to figureout how to tap into it consistently. Maybe Driveline could help with that?
