Fans & writers might be disappointed by the Cards lack of a major deal, but let's be realistic... The Cards don't make big deadline deals because they (over)value their prospects and the yearly competitive model they have based their decisions on...
Ben,
They weren't going to give up a lot of prospects, just like they weren't going to write Scherzer a check for $43 million/yr for 3 years, which I know you posted as the solution.
Good news is that they have a good supply of young players and prospects to build from... they still need some young aces to build around. You know, strikeout pitchers that you need to make a deep run in the postseason. How do they get them? - trade most likely since they don't write the big checks for pitchers...
Strikeout pitchers like Graceffo and Hence are years away from making an impact - so find some good young power pitchers to go along with your good young position players base. -
If they're not going to pay the contracts for elite free agents in the prime of their careers, and they're not going to give up the prospect pool required to trade for elite players in the prime of their careers before free agency arrives, why not take the same lean in free agency -- add elite, proven but older players -- that they have had success in trading for, like with Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado? Signing Max Scherzer would have been the free-agent mirror of that approach to trades. I think it was a mistake not to bring him home, and it was absolutely within reach.

The world lost a great human with the passing of Bill Russell. Always one of my favorite players. Him and Wilt was a great matchup before anyone ever imagined Bird and Magic.
What I appreciate even more was the way he cared. None of this social media junk where it's about shooting out a few comments. When he cared about something, and he cared about a lot of deep issues, he physically went and let his presence and in-person communication show his commitment. the stories of how he carried himself should be mandatory reading for those who want to make a difference.
May he rest in peace and know he made a positive impact. -

If I was a Yankees fan I would love Carpenter’s comeback story… but I’m a Cardinals fan and I think it is straight (expletive) that he decided to go on this hitting pilgrimage after his $39m contract had run out. It isn’t like he battled injuries his last 3 seasons here and now he is finally healthy. He just refused to adapt his swing and his approach while he cashed stupid checks issued by Mo. Not cool.

Sometimes a change of scenery works wonders. He could not get the help he needed here, or was not open to it, or some kind of combination. I don't think it had much to do with a lack of interest in trying to snap out of a spiral that ended his Cardinals career. Sometimes being out from beneath a contract like that can be a catalyst, too.

Cost of doing business. Oviedo was not in long-term plans. We learned that with how they threw him into the fire last season and let him suffer the effects of it. No prospect is blocked now that DH is in play, but Nunez had to pass through Rule 5 if not added to 40-man. He was marked as guy who could be flipped, and he was. Pirates have so far to go to be decent there's less of a chance of the trade burning them.

why are the cardinals satisfied with the outfield production? If no one was saying they needed outfield help then thats a problem. who in their outfield is performing better than League average? Carlson is 107OPS+ which is slightly above average O'Niell is at 87 OPS+ and Bader is 93 OPS+ this should be seen as an issue.

I would trade O'Neill for starting pitching help today if it got me a high-level starter or helped get me there. He's productive when locked in and healthy, but he's too often hurt or not locked in. Teams will always be intrigued by his tools, giving him value. He's a Scott Boras client and contract negotiations, based on this past arbitration, will be difficult at best. I'd move him for the right pitcher, or in the package that got me there.
