Cards had poked around on him in quest for Class AAA depth, but guess he got a better deal or one that was more suited to his liking from Pirates.
I'd really like to see Max Scherzer pitch for the Cardinals. So, sue me :)
They should shop him. They should consider leaving him unprotected in the expansion draft if he's not moved by then. You have to wonder if his best is behind him, and if his best skill (scoring) is going to be at the kind of level it has to be to justify the other things he doesn't do when he doesn't score. He's an effective player when he's scoring and a bit of a burden when he's not. That's hard to justify in this system. Throw in the fact that he was irked by the captaincy decision before the season, and it's wise to at least see what other fits might be out there -- and what the return could be.
You hate to see it. Then again, they are probably trying to stay awake while the Cards hit.
First he needs to dominate Memphis. He's doing well, but not crushing it the way he needs to force the front office's hand.
Don't forget the rally usher doing his part. Probably saved the Cards a run. The Diamondbacks, apparently, have a pitching shortage that is so bad they have to let their pitcher hit with the bases loaded. Late in the game. The Cardinals have to sweep these guys. They're not a competitive team.
They've stopped using it. As evidenced by some of the sky-high spin rates that have returned to earth.
One of Shildt's biggest whiffs was that strange defense of the Cardinals he went on during the Blues' Cup run when someone asked if the Cardinals could learn something from the Blues. He should have said, yes. Instead he seemed to get offended by it. There's a lot every team could learn from those Blues. The importance of depth. Buying all the way into a system. No one being bigger than the team. A little edge can go a long way. Of course, the Blues can learn from that team, too. They haven't been able to find it since the pandemic.
Hard to interpret Edman and DeJong's comments about Albert as anything but tension among the ranks. As for what's going on in the clubhouse, harder than ever before to say due to the limited access this season. We're getting close, but still at a distance. Clearly some guys are cool on Albert. How sustainable is that? Probably not very unless winning makes everything better, and soon.
Gotta run, folks. Went long today and still could not get to them all. I'll try to get some of the unanswered ones in the chat recap. Saw a lot more comments than questions, but that's all good. Venting can be helpful. Cheers and talk to you same time and place next week.
