I've come across a couple of these kinds of questions today. If people don't think playing a professional sport is physically taxing, I'm not going to convince them. It's one of the most confusing opinions I come across. We go out and cut our grass in this heat and feel like we got hit by a bus. Then some wonder why Edman is dragging -- after playing more games than anyone else in the game this season. Yes, baseball has gotten harder. Look at the velocity of the pitches. Look at the athleticism of the players. The strength, the speed. Every sport has gotten more challenging and difficult by the evolution of the modern athlete; why would baseball be any different? And that's just the physical component. Now throw in the mental side. Of playing up to a contract. Or playing up to a fanbase, like this one, that is always hungry for success. No one is playing a tiny violin. It's a great job and most of these guys know they are blessed to get the chance. But is it hard? Hell yes it's hard. If it wasn't, more of us would be doing it -- not cutting our own grass. There's also one more thing to consider. A lot of time, money and attention is now spent on studying what approach gets the best performance out of a player, and increasingly teams are seeing that they are better off factoring some more rest than teams historically did in the past. You can get more out of Paul Goldschmidt by giving him the occasional off day than you can by letting him play 162. The data shows he bounces back with better at-bats after a rare off day. It's about being smart, and being smart doesn't mean not being tough. End rant :)

I have lost a lot of respect for Yadier Molina, first he comes in the camp out of shape. Then he doesn’t stay with the team and goes back home to recuperate for being out of shape, ridiculous! He should be there supporting his team. Adam Wainwright should be mad at him, Bolth he Albert Pujols, have been always saying what a great guy he is but he leaves them high and dry. Tell me where I’m wrong please.
-
I don't think anything that happens during a player's final season should overshadow his career, especially a career that has been as long and successful as Molina's.Would this be a sad way for it to end? Yep.But I don't think he's going to go out like this.Hope I'm right. What you suggested is not what his teammates are feeling. They want him back because they miss his presence and his play. They're not fuming. They're hoping.

Eh, it's not very independent under this new ownership. It's partnered with the NFL to basically work as a testing ground for rule changes, etc. What could be good for the XFL's staying power won't be great for the narrative that made it popular here -- that it wanted little to do with The Shield. Also: If they are coming back to STL it would probably be good to announce that? Handling of this has been really strange.

Am I the only Cardinal fan not freaking out about this stretch? Take 4 starters (O'Neill, Yadi, Bader, Jack) out of any of the 30 MLB lineups and the team would struggle - especially playing in its toughest 2 week stretch of the season. Brewers have failed to put distance between themselves and the Cards and think we are looking ahead to a really good second half given the returns and the schedule.
With that said, is there any way the Cardinals would be interested in trading and signing Willson Contreras? -
I don't think so.Don't think they would do that to Molina -- and don't think they would dare to give the prospect cost to the Cubs to get him, and risk seeing some of those guys lead Chicago's next surge whenever that comes.I do think Contreras could make a lot of sense for the Cardinals in free agency after this season if he's available.

Jeff Albert has taken a lot of flack over the last few years for how poorly many of the Cards hitters have performed. He's also received a bit more love recently for how the younger players are performing since his hitting approach has been instituted throughout the minor league system. However, if you look at the peripherals, this team is among the worst in baseball at hard hit rate, exit velocity, etc. I wasn't one of those guys who blamed it on the batting coach but at some point you would think he'd have to answer for this.
-
I've pointed it out, that the same metrics that were pointed to when the Cardinals were struggling as signs of progress are now lagging severely now. Things like average exit velocity, hard-hit rate, barrel percentage, etc. That should be a concern for the playoffs and the kind of pitching that waits there.

Man, Perron will be missed if he goes. I'd understand it, but he was as good of a competitor in crunch time as this team has had. If Armstrong senses he's going to have a hard time living up to the contract he gets next, though, he won't be emotional. And his non-emotional decisions in these spots before have tended to be the right calls. Yes, defense needs help. That's been clear.

Salvador Perez of the Royals might be a guy that could be had given his contract cost. If the Cards traded them Herrera and the Royals would be willing to take on Dejong for money offset. I am sure Yadi could co-exist with another great if it helps him win his last year.

Bumgarner is owed $23 million in 2023 and $14 in 2024.Corbin is owed $24 in 2023 and . . . more than $35 in 2024.I'd rather have MadBum, and he's cheaper and easier to cut if things don't work out.I'm not sure either one fits the description of what the team seems to be prioritizing in its discussions about what it needs -- a starter with a high strikeout rate.

Why is Ollie not taking more heat for this team playing well below expectations? Injuries happen across the board, so that cannot be an excuse. Ultimately the manager is responsible for the wins and losses, not Jeff Albert, not Mike Maddox, not John Mozeliak, and not Mike Girsch
