Man, the Ozuna deal offered all sorts of lessons. Make sure the guy is healthy. Make sure you have accurately projected your own prospects. Make sure you're not settling, getting talked off the guy you really want, or letting the trade partner dictate the timing of a deal. And, perhaps more than anything, make sure the big spends (free agency or otherwise) are for proven difference makers, not hopeful ones. Hindsight makes it easy, right? I thought the Ozuna deal was a good one. It wasn't awful, but considering what he didn't turn out to be, how soon he was gone, and what the trade pieces are doing elsewhere, it's probably the one Mozeliak regrets the most. In fact, I know it is. He's said it.

If someone on the P-D staff could do some research on this, it would be appreciated....For those of us with streaming TV (YouTube in my case) who have purchased the Bally's app so we could watch Blues games....could some questions be asked/investigating be done an update on whether or not the Cardinals will be part of Bally's app coverage?

How many opening day rosters have the Cardinals had in the your time that the 5 winter projected SP we're healthy and ready to go? What's your guess for this upcoming season? If so are Hudson, Liberatore, etc. good enough to carry the team till the front office sees the OF fall into place and knows which trade pieces they want to use to bring in new SP?
-
Zero, but I don't like predicting which guys will be injured. That's a grim guessing game. The Cardinals rotation is not strong enough, I don't think, at the top to be a deep postseason team. That's if all are healthy. Factor in the reality that health issues will pop up, probably starting at spring training, and things could get worse.

Yes, I understand a lot of us do mistake answers with questions, but people don't want to hear about the Yadi and Pujols and Waino stuff anymore, we understand their HOF and Legends and brought us exciting things, but it's time to move on now. I hope you can see where I'm coming from.

I'll take the press-box route. A little disappointed the home opener is so delayed. Week 4?! Seems to me like the XFL should have prioritized kicking off Game 1 in a place that went above and beyond to support the last version of the league. But, it's a Texas-based thing first and foremost. And the team will be hustled in and out even for home games, as the home base is in Texas for all teams.
-
Dang. Correa for 6/200. What am I missing. How are the Cards not in on that? Move TE back to 2nd, Donovan is utility and trade from Yepez, Burleson, Liberatore, Woodford, Hudson plus to get a #1/2 starter in ARB years. Remove Dejong and get back some money ( $3-4 MIL) and your at/around $205 MIL ish with plenty of pitching and sticks. Now that team can compete and you didn't lose anything that you absolutely couldn't live without.
-
There were reportedly a handful of teams or so that were tracking the Correa situation as his market dropped due to the physical concerns, but not sure if Cardinals were in that group or not. As I said earlier, they really only seemed to be vetting shortstops vigorously when they were considering the trade for Murphy, one that could have cost them a middle infielder and required a back-fill. If you weren't hot and heavy on Correa before the physical snafu, probably harder to talk yourself into it, even at a reduced price, once concerns popped. The Twins wanted him back from the jump, have a good feel for his health and saw the concern drive him to a price point they desired. So they pounced. Makes sense.
-
When I look at hockey standings comparing teams to the Blues I focus on how many + - their win to losses are(Blues presently +2). The six top teams in the West are from +8 to +14. The four remaining teams in front of the Blues chasing the two Wild Card spots have Cgy, Nsh and Col at +5 w Edm at +3. So do you see the Blues go on a heater before the deadline ... especially w their poor record at home? And then realistically wouldn't also multiple teams have to crash and burn for the Blues to sneak in? So what and when does Army get the best value for the three players and do you see him dealing them all? How important is it for Barby to continue to play well and for ROR and Tarasenko to get back in the lineup and show other teams they can help this season? What's the range of returns the team can receive?
-
If Tarasenko and O'Reilly can get back and prove they're mostly good to go, I don't think their trade stock will be damaged too much. They're proven guys with championship experience on expiring contracts. They are appealing rentals as long as they're good to go, especially if it's a team that is hungry for playoff experience. High draft picks and/or high prospects. That should be the goal. Armstrong has indicated the team needs to be around 10 games above .500 by the deadline to give sense it can have a decent chance of doing postseason damage.

Ben,
I am not suggesting Mo lose his job, and Dewitt is his biggest advocate, but a new role created for him outside of media obligations would be nice. I think his message and cadence has gotten stale, and quite frankly he seems to bristle at some pretty fair questions. Do you sense that angst among fans (and not just the vocal minority). Obviously it hasn't affected ticket sales and I am not suggesting that, but it could if the results remain similar. -
I think fans care a lot more about winning and postseason success more than Mozeliak's interactions with media members. And they certainly should. But sometimes his responses about the postseason slide come across as a personal defense. The questions that trigger him in that way are the same ones a growing amount of fans are asking. How the questions are answered are irrelevant. What matters a lot more is if the Cardinals are truly as OK with the increasing postseason irrelevance as they sometimes suggest. I don't think they are, but what they do about it says a lot more than what they say about it.

So if I'm following along correctly, MO would/was monitoring the Swanson deal pending what happened in the Murphy deal, but since no middle infielder was used in that deal, Correa is a complete after thought? Yes, their model flawed in 2023. Correa/Murphy >Contreras, Gorman, Graceffo, Donovan combined.
-
I don't think I said he was a complete afterthought? Maybe the Cardinals were one of the teams tracking it. Doesn't make much difference now. I said it before, during the Turner hype. If the Cardinals were going to spend what it took to land one of the big free-agent shortstops -- Turner, Correa, Bogaerts -- they would probably be admitting they were looking to upgrade there. They stiff-armed it, talking up Edman instead. I'm not saying they were right to stay away, just that it doesn't surprise me that they did.

The recent Jim Bowden article for The Athletic had (has?) Cards fans going crazy trying to figure out the "certain player". The statement was, "It is believed the Cardinals are working to acquire a certain player but want to make sure more specifics don’t become public because it would hurt their chances of completing a trade."
The phrasing here is so strange. When I first read it, I read it more as a thought exercise of what the Cards might likely be doing vs. real, actual, hard reporting. But clearly others think there is fire here to go with the smoke.
Is this just intentionally vague writing so that he can say, "see, I told you" when/if a trade is announced? Seems that whatever trade is made would fit this category.
Or are the Cards really focusing on what one could conceivably read into this that it's a big name player not necessarily known to be available ala Goldy & Arenado? -
That would be a better question for Bowden. He clearly got the response he wanted with his Cardinals, um, update? Of course the Cardinals are looking at trades. Just like they're looking at remaining free agents. I don't think they're done. I guess I need to figure out how to word it more spectacularly, and sprinkle in some anonymous sourcing.

What kind of a grievance does a player like Pallante have with MLB when his parent club sticks him in the pen? He's shown that he's capable of being a starter in MLB, came through the minors as a starter, but as a reliever he will receive less compensation come arbitration time. He would start for 10-12 other teams and therein make more money in the long haul. Thompson too. I'm sure they're glad to make the bigs the first year, but after that, they are burning daylight on making money in their career.
-
Most relievers come through the minors as a starter, and his future (rotation/bullpen) is not set in stone yet, not even for this upcoming season. Relievers are getting paid more all the time, especially good to elite ones. The path for pitchers on the fence between starting and relieving is not perfect but it's pretty set. Get in where you fit in, make your case with performance when you get the chance, and then use leverage acquired to influence as you gain more say in the process, whether that comes through free agency or a relationship built with the team. The Cardinals, for example, recently gave Jordan Hicks more of a starter look. Didn't look great. They're not inflexible on the idea.
-
Same Mo different year. Starts building a good team then stops before he finishes. I have no problem with the starting catcher, 1st, 2nd, SS, 3rd. If healthy O'Neal in the outfield. Nootbarr if this was not just a one year hitting spree. Now Mo is going to count on the starting rotation to be healthy and a bunch of rookies tp preform? I know season has not started yet, trade deadline is not here, winter meetings are gone. Same Mo different year. Can you tell me I am wrong?
-
-
Not sure what you want me to say that is different than what I've said before. If it's Contreras and nothing else beyond minor moves, totally fair to be disappointed. But I'm going to wait and see what gets done before the games start counting before saying he's done. Some prefer to call it early. I'll wait.

Hello, Mr. Frederickson. Thanks for your time. Glad to hear the big-spending Mets won't be getting Correa after all. Couldn't happen to a nicer group. The owners' pleas of poverty last year sure are ringing hollow now, as are their claims of wanting a system that treats the haves and have-nots more equally.
