I didn't cover those teams. Also, how did the outfield those years measure up to the current group for range and throwing arm?
No, because losing two games to a team right on your heels for the playoff spot would be doubly hurtful.
I was more in the Tom Brunansky Era when I got here.
Braun's contract expired, which is a different deal. Also, was there evidence that Ryan was dying to play in 2021? Reports back in February said he wasn't looking to come back.
The Cardinals need to win every game possible because at some point one of these others teams will get hot. They can't expect four other teams to stay in a prolonged slump at the same time.
It depends on when the player hit the NHL. A 19-year-old defenseman could be in prime by 24. A 19-year forward could hit that at 22. And while there are 33-year-old defensemen who are very good, they are often past their prime after taking 10-plus years of abuse.
If Carpenter gets another year with any kind of contract, DeWitt should fire everybody. I mean, come on.
Given what he earns every two weeks, that is unlikely.
Yes, that was a sweet deal.
Much damage was suffered in June when the pitching broke down. Another five victories that month would have locked the Cardinals into the wild card game by this point. So, yes, not adding more help sooner left a mark on this season.
If the Cardinals are going to spend multiple assets, that price must be paid for pitching. This team can win with pitching and fielding in this ballpark.
The Blues did not have first-round picks in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2019. And they have generally drafted down in the round, which makes it hard to score big. But at least they made productive trades with Tage Thompson and Dominik Bokk.
If healthy, Mikolas can be a solid No. 3/No. 4 starter. While he is highly unlikely to return value on this contract, he has a chance to be viable. As for Shaw, he is a explosive athlete who should help immediately as a defender and rebounder, then evolve into a more well-rounded player. His is a classic Cuonzo Martin player with length and a high motor.
He has had 65 plate appearances in the second half of the season, so he's not been in the middle of the lineup much. But, yes, the fact he is getting any plate appearances is baffling.
Thompson arrived with an NHL-caliber shot, but a stick-figure body. And like a lot of young forwards who tower over their peers, he had trouble keeping his feet moving. But the folks in Buffalo say he may finally be coming on.
Alec Burleson rose quickly this year while climbing three levels, but he finally hit a bit of a wall against Triple-A pitching. He can drive the ball, so he has a chance. Right now he is behind Lars Nootbaar and Nick Plummer.
A contract is a contract. The Cardinals are paying almost all of Dexter Fowler's contract for him to rehab the knee injury he suffered with the Angels.
Bradford's contract was an all-timer. Great guy, he had obvious talent, but the injury bug followed him to the NFL and ruined him.
I imagine he believes he can still hit, although he doesn't project great outward confidence when he bats.
