I can't imagine that Delvin Perez has much trade value, given his inability to progress offensively. He seems likely to time out as a prospect and fall by the wayside. I also doubt that other teams see Lars Nootbaar as more than a defensively capable fourth outfielder at this point. Juan Yepez has trade value for sure because teams asked about him in the offseason. He would be a tough guy to give up, given his offensive upside. I'm not sure where the front office stands on Alec Burleson, but his progress combined with Yepez's progress does create a potential logjam. Jake Woodford would have some value now that he has stretched out with a capable showing in his last Triple-A start. He has developed on schedule. Teams with a quality starting pitcher (like the A's with Frankie Montas) with surely target Zack Thompson and/or Matthew Liberatore.

I'll just leave this hear for the chatters to review.
Verhagen - 13 BB's, 16K's, 6.30 ERA
McFarland - 7.43 ERA
And if you thought meh, I think they deserve better than those #'s suggest.
Verhagen - 6.23 FIP
McFarland - 5.01 FIP
That Bobo, is what is called not good at baseball. I'm not saying never, just saying not now... -
Oliver Marmol's withering assessment of Drew VerHagen after Thursday's loss made you wonder if we're about to see a shuffling of relievers on the roster. Marmol does not sugarcoat his views. Marmol has been more optimistic about TJ McFarland's potential to overcome his bad first half because the team detected a better sink on his sinker.. But like Marmol likes to say, it's all about production . . . and McFarland could find himself on the clock if doesn't produce outs after getting back to work.

If Mizzou can beat k state I give them 6 wins if not 5 wins I look at Georgia, Tennessee, Florida as no chance. If we win all non conference games and win 2 of Vanderbilt, Kentucky , south Carolina, Arkansas, auburn that is 6 wins. In my mind very good season. Then 2023 7 wins and 2024 that is when would should be a factor in SEC EAST
-
That is an optimistic view -- especially for the longer haul, when the SEC will make conference scheduling even tougher with Texas and Oklahoma coming aboard. In the near term the Tigers will need surprising good quarterbacking from relatively unproven players. But Coach Drink is going at this full tilt and he has filled a lot of immediate needs both on the recruiting trail and in the transfer portal. He has driven fundraising and he's helped Mizzou move into the brave new world of high-end college football. I believe has the right coach, but you can't underestimate how hard this job has become.

The Cardinals haven't spent much on this middle relief corps, which is part of the problem. This is not the place to cut costs. As noted week after week in the offseason, this team needed to meet the goal of loading the bullpen with high-leverage relievers. The way the game is managed now, you need at least a half-dozen guys who can be trusted with a late lead. Right now the Cardinals have three with Giovanny Gallegos, Ryan Helsley and Genesis Cabrera. Zack Thompson and Johan Oviedo have chipped in with some nice work, but it's safe to say this team needs to add a couple of high-leverage relievers before the trade deadline.

Good afternoon BoBo. Given that Dejong is likely coming back and Donovan, Nootbar and Yepez are taking games in the outfield, and Burelson, Connor Capel and Ben Deluzio are knocking at the Door and Jordan Walker is likely to move to outfield is it time to start considering trading Carlson? Since Mookie Betts has been injured the Dodgers are looking for a outfielder that can hit RH pitching and Carlson mashed righties. Would Carlson be enough to land Frankie Montas in a three way trade with Oakland and LA? Carlson goes to LA Montas goes to STL and LA gives prospects to Oakland. I would hate to see Carlson go but STL needs pitching this year and next. As always thank you for the chats and all of your hard work!
-
I don't how Paul DeJong gets a lot of at bats for this team. He hits the occasional homer at Triple-A, but he is still a 1-for-4, 0-for-4 type hitter. Alec Burleson is an interesting outfield prospect. Jordan Walker will be one shortly. But I neither Juan Yepez nor Brendan Donovan smooth defensively in the outfield and I don't see much to get excited about with the other outfielders you mentioned. As for Carlson, maybe this is as good as he gets -- or maybe he still has higher offensively levels to reach. If the latter is true, then dealing him could prove to be a massive mistake. The Cardinals can't keep everybody, true, but I'm not sure Carlson is the guy to move.

I believe John Mozeliak is open to adding a starter. But if you are paying attention to baseball this season, you will notice that teams have not started trading starting pitchers yet. That market heats up closer to the trade deadline. Looking at the list of guys likely to be available, there are some good mid-rotation guys but not much in the way of team changers.I believe the more immediate need is adding two high-leverage relievers.

Waino will always be Waino and no one will ever question his effort but the numbers are sliding. Not sliding in terms of what he can bring over 162 but how the club needs to view him compared to 2021. He's not a top of the rotation pitcher anymore, he's a solid 3/4 depending who your #1 and #2 are.
-
That is probably a fair assessment. That's why the team needs Jack Flaherty to translate the strength he feels in his shoulder into more consistent performance. His competitiveness got the best of him when he persuaded Oliver Marmol to let him work his way back at the big league level instead of doing more time in the minors.
-
Why did Mo give Yadi a raise again this winter? $1m doesn't seem like much but when you add it to the $5m they gave Dickerson (who they never needed) and the $2.5M they gave VerHagen (cute Mo bomb) you get $8.5M. And when you add that to what they paid Matz you get $22.5M... that is a completely different starting pitcher.
-
The Cardinals certainly could have afforded a $22.5 million-per-year pitcher with the payroll they had in place, even with those other decisions. But Bill DeWitt Jr. would need lots of convincing to throw that kind of money at a free-agent pitcher these days, given the MLB pitching attrition rate that is only getting more severe.
-
-
Marmol is using Albert as a part-time player. And that part could get even smaller if the Cardinals ever have their full lineup again. Juan Yepez just keeps hitting, so he should see more DH work against lefties if the team is back to 100 percent at the corner infield and outfield spots.
-
I meant to state that Carlson mashes LH pitching and LA needs an outfielder that can hit Lefties. Would Carlson be a good trade candidate to get some pitching? Does LA have anyone that fits the bill? If LA doesn't could Mo get this done via a three way trade with LA. I agree with your assessment of the Cards relievers and as I would hate to see Carlson go but Mo will have to give up someone of value to get pitching. Thanks again Bobo.
-
Sure, the Dodgers would love Carlson. But that that has take big injury hits on its pitching staff. If the Cardinals trade a player of Carlson's caliber, the pitcher coming back needs to Top 3 in this rotation now and either under contract or team controlled for several years.

As I was telling a Mizzou fan just yesterday, I really liked what little we got to see of Brady Cook last year. He can run and he can throw it. But I have no idea how any of these guys will bear up against SEC defenses. And if the coaches were being honest, they would likely say the same thing. We won't know until the winner of the preseason competition gets under fire for real.

Arenado was a once in lifetime gift by the Rockies, any GM would've taken that " , but I'm telling you, the one that stings the most is the Ozuna deal. Damn. Sandy 7-2 with 1.72 ERA & Gallen 4-2 with a 2.92 ERA. TBH, both are better than Flaherty. Miami picked right, we got a clown in Ozuna with a chartreuse elbow sleeve who couldn't catch a cold. If you get your nickname " Big Bear " from the strip club, might want to pass...

Bobo
Every week on critical of Moe. Probably it gets old. But I do believe he’s the weak link in this organization. For every Diaz there’s a Cecil, for every Arenado there’s a carpenter extension. For the Goldschmidt trade there’s a Dexter failure. The Cardinals have been Slightly above average for several years and that kind of fits his personality he’s decent at his job but not outstanding at reconciling ownerships limitation of funds with talent available. He’s the only consistent factor between Matheny Shild And Marmol -
The Cardinals have dramatically outperformed their peer franchises on his watch. You keep pretending otherwise, but that's the reality. You hate the fact that the team has stayed in the division chase again while also stacking up promising young talent. The reality is the organization's talent base is stronger than it has been in some time. Given the number of expiring contracts, the Cardinals are set up to sustain this run of perennial contention for some time. To suggest that the president of baseball operations is the weak link in such a successful baseball operation doesn't make much sense.

I love Jaccob Slavin and his $5.3 million cap hit for three more seasons is very team friendly. But Vladimir Tarasenko will be working under an expiring contract next season and I'd be surprised if he would embrace a trade to Carolina. And why would the Canes trade a defensive cornerstone for a rental forward?
-
Do you really think the Cardinals need Gold Glove level defense at every position? Ever since Marmol has been playing below level defensive players like Gorman and Yepez they have been winning more and Donovan is a league average defender in the outfield and SS and possibly well above average at 2nd and 3rd but those positions are occupied. It would be disappointing to see those guys sacrifice playing time due to a defensive orthodox.
-
The Cardinals have given away some runs this season while playing infielders in the outfield. It's OK to spot guys out there here and there, but when Tyler O'Neill is healthy there is no reason to do much of that. Nolan Gorman has held up OK at second base, but ideally he would log most of his time at DH.

Hello, Mr. Gordon. thank you for the chat. Manfred, the "Cardboard Commissioner" can spend all day spinning MLB's streaming of games as a way to better serve fans, but in the end it all comes down to another money grab by greedy owners. If Manfred wanted to best serve the fans, the owners could have made the streaming an added option instead of exclusive rights. Do you agree? Thanks.

The cardinals won’t be able to beat out the brewers for the central crown for 2 reasons. One they have no Ace like the brewers do. Don’t give me Flaherty as one because other than 1/2 of one season he’s hardly even been the #1. Two, they don’t have an absolute shut down closer, Helsey may eventually become one but he is still untested in the real critical times. When Milwaukee gets their pitchers back, we’re toast. No 17 game streak to save the club this year and ‘deja vu all over again’ Mo is slow walking his response.
