Shildt got fired because he strongly disagreed with the guy two pay grades up from him. He overplayed his hand as keeper of the Cardinal Way. As for how the players handle Marmol's decisions and explanations, I imagine he will might a player here or there the wrong way. But as long as Marmol is fair and plays the guys who play best, ultimately that's all most mature athletes want from their manager.

Based on the hours I spend watching shoot interviews from old-time grapplers, I'm guessing that Bruiser Brody or Harley Race would have been the last two guys you want to have a bar fight with.I missed the Golden Age of enforcement, so I can't compare a Dave Semenko to Dave "The Hammer" Schultz. The toughest guy on my watch had to be Bob Probert. Getting hit just seemed to fire him up. The biggest puncher had to be Tony Twist, who build himself up like a WWE star. Joy Kocur had a big punch.

I disagree with your ranking Tarasenko above Tkachuk. It has been a while since Tkachuk has played, but my main recollection of him is that when he and another guy went into the corner for the puck, he came out with the puck 100% of the time. Perhaps you based it on years played. /but Tkachuk had a much better overall game and almost as good of a scoring touch when in his prime.

Bernie Miklasz wrote a piece earlier this week calling out the Cards for starting the season with another injury riddled pitching staff. There were ample pitchers available for reasonable one year contracts who mostly are doing quite well. All the while, the organization has slipped to number 13 in payroll while second only to LAD in attendance. Has Bill DeWitt Jr become so risk adverse and afraid of his own shadow to ramp it up a bit or just completely obsessed with the consistency model strategy?
-
DeWitt is obsessed with consistent success, yes. And the Cardinals are right back in the playoff chase as usual. Crowds are big, business is good. As for the pitching, due to the lockout the Cardinals did not know that both Jack Flaherty and Alex Reyes would show up unable to pitch in spring training. Once they learned that, it's fair to say they should have signed a few veterans to add depth. But on balance, they have gained surprising good production from their young pitchers this season. Obviously Dakota Hudson need to find some command and Steven Matz needs to pitch like he did last season or else this team will need to add two starters before the trade deadline. And there is not a lot of great help on the market right now.

What are the chances that Arenado gets frustrated that the Cards don't make an impact tradeline deal and opts out? I know he's said over and over, that he loves the STL and wants to stay here. But after 2 seasons in a row, where we have a good team, but decline to make any improvements, would he finally say that it doesn't look like management is willing to take the big step and become a World Series contender? The team is not a contender and that point and please don't say all the injured guys coming back will make them one.
-
The Cardinals have made significant in-season improvements this season. He sees a strong organization here with excellent young talent rising in the ranks. Yepez, Gorman, Donovan, Thompson, Fernandez, Liberatore -- there is some talent there among the in-season additions. Masyn Winn and Jordan Walker are in the Futures Game -- this is not a franchise in distress. But if he leaves, leaves and the Cardinals will have $30 million-plus per year to spend on players in their prime.

Looks like the record that Waino and Molina were chasing might just be out of reach. Thought they need 9 starts to break it. Hoping Molina could come back start with Waino and leave after several innings, thus protecting his knees to break the record, something like this is one in a life time. Thank you for the chats

Army should have resigned Husso. He was willing to give the Blues a hometown discount. He got 4.75 AAV for 3 years from Detroit. Blues could have signed him for 4.5 AAV. So Chuckie sideburns gets 2 million AAV hypothetically. The Blues can't pay an extra 2.5 million for top goaltending? Army might be going with Hofer then? What's the deal?

Look up catcher Christian Vazquez, he’s with the Red Sox a team currently minus 14.5 games out of the division lead and a pending free agent with an option for 2022 to boot for $7 Million with a $250k buyout. Why not consider him here for the Cardinals for at least a rental for the rest of 2022?

I've been saying since fans wanted Carson Kelly to be called up that fans need to appreciate Molina while he's here instead of clamoring for his replacement. Seems like reality is setting in.There's only a handful of catchers in the majors each season that hit over .280 and Molina has done that for his career. even though he's considered a defensive catcher his offensive stats are pretty impressive in their own right.

Thank you for the chat today Jeff. The three relievers Mo signed in the off-season; Brooks, Verhagen, and Wittgren have contributed very little and middle relief remains a vital. It is frustrating because there were so many excellent middle relief options during the past winter. On another note the trend seems to be pitching around Goldschmidt and Arenado. That will likely continue until the front office finds a bat to drive in some runs in the 5 and 6 slots. I found it mind-numbing that with Burleson's power numbers he did no get a shot when the team had obvious need. Splitting Goldschmidt and Arenado in the 2 and 4 slots would get the 3 hole (Gorman or O'Neil more fastballs and hitting Burleson 5th would get Arenado more fastballs.

Wow. I'd be really surprised if ROR got $6 million AAV next year. That's almost what he's making now. That would be paying for past performance. If that's what he wants, I think the team would have to let him go, as much as that hurts. I would worry a lot about a Backes-esque decline.

Fans insisted it would happen last season and it didn't. And now the big picture for the Cardinals looks better than it has in a long time. They have more muscle for the middle of the batting order than they have had in long while.Maybe another team would be willing to guarantee him more money for the back end of his career, but he has a LOT of money coming from the Cardinals.

Do you think any consequences will come to the front office if they don’t make the playoffs? I think they really need a new perspective. They knew paying Molina and Pujols was going to be a big risk for possibly no performance and yet they did it anyway. They need somebody a little bit more unemotional about players. Also the current front office has the distinction of trading rookie of the year and possibly Cy Young away in five years
