It's just roster management. How many outfielders can the team house on the 40-man? Actually his value would rise if he came to St. Louis and got some hits. One way or another the Cardinals will address the outfielder surplus so the don't have a good hitting prospect stuck in the minors.

Let's face it, the FO cannot win no matter what they do unless by some quirk of time and space the Cards would go to the World Series. If they trade up by letting go of some players with promise, you can bet they will hear about losing the next ty Cobb but if they look for guys who might be able to help they will be accused of dumpster diving. There is no safe option, there is no pleasing the majority of fans. You could not pay me enough to be in Mo's shoes year after year.

You have to admit Army has set the table for Matthew Tkachuck. If he doesn't sign a long term with Calgary he will be traded by the mid season trade deadline. Now that's interesting because Matthew can say he's not signing an extension with any team but the Blues. Thusly diminishing his trade value to that of a rental. So Vladi for Matthew by the trade deadline is very plausible. Vladi probably would sign an extension with Calgary.

The Marlins make that trade because if you add 2 steady to excellent offensive players, a serviceable pitcher (Liberatore) to a Marlins team which is not going to see the playoffs this year, or perhaps for multiple years... The Marlins desperately need solid hitters, and if O'Neil returns to form, a force in their lineup... They have lots of pitchers, and more on the way... What's wrong with you? You start your vacation early and turn your brain off???

Losing DP57 will definitely be felt, but the Blues should still project as top 3 in Central. The Avs are the Avs, the Wild are in cap hell, Preds and Jets seem about the same, while the Yotes rebuild and no on really knows what's going on with the Blackhawks.
Hopefully some young guys fill the gaps for a year and this team takes a run at Tkachuk if other talent walks after this year. -
The Blues will be OK next season, but it will take some work to offset the loss of Perron's offense. The real trouble comes down the road. This team will could old on defense in a few years, so the Blues need to develop Perunovich and Mikkola and get more prospects in the pipeline.

Why don’t the Blues bring Tony Hrkac back home to St. Louis to head up their scouting department? He’s been with Tampa Bay the past few years and obviously that franchise has had tremendous success during his tenure. Doug Armstrong knows Hrkac well from their time together in Dallas, and it seems Hrkac would be a big boost to the Blues’ scouting department. The Blues need every advantage they can get, and bringing in someone like Hrkac who has thrived with a very successful franchise makes a lot of sense. Doesn’t he live in St. Louis anyway? It’s time to bring The Circus back into the Blues family.

To your comment about Thompson not being viewed as a high end prospect. I read the same stuff. But, now that we have seen him in the big leagues, his stuff is much harder with more movement and more change in velocity than advertised and much better than Liberatore. He looks like he could be a good starter. To my comment earlier, that is why I was disappointed that when then sent him out it wasn't to stretch him out. I have more faith in the talent than you it appears. I think this team has a chance. Like I said earlier, if the Cards management wants buy-in on developing from within, they should be willing to take some heat when they don't appear to use the best internal options. To me that seems to be part of the issue. I also think if they can add a bat to replace Dickerson the Pujols show doesn't kill this team...

The fact that Thompson pitched in relief upon his return got my interest as well. If pitches in relief there, then why not here. I agree that he may be outperforming his projections. The analysts soured on him last year -- and for good reason, given his struggles.

I'm sure there is, but I do not know where to direct you. So much factors into that: swing-and-miss rate, chase rate, exit velocity, launch angle . . . teams use advanced metrics to project long-range potential. Basic numbers only play a part in that. Adolis Garcia, for instance, always had power and always hit homers. But he also lacked plate discipline, which is problematic at the MLB level. And some of this is just eyeballing swing mechanics. Moises Gomez destroyed Double-A pitching this season for the Cardinals and he has held up so far at Memphis. But scouts wonder how that swing could possible work against betting pitching.

If Army gets Tkachuck for Vladi this year or in free agency he will have changed the core of the team significantly. We would be younger and still competitive for a Cup. Thomas, Kyrou, Tkachuck, Perunovich, Bolduc, Neighbors , Snugarud could be our core in 2 years. All the while still being really good. We would all have to tip our hat to him. That's pretty amazing.

Your former colleague Bernie Miklasz has said he believes the Cards need someone to toughen them up like a John Lackey. Says everyone on this team likes each other perhaps too much and needs a different personality to push the team to greater heights. Curious your thoughts on this.
