I'm sure that is the sort of trade the Cardinals will ponder if all the young hitters look good in the spring. They cant keep them all.

C'mon man! Don't rant the the FO is taking advantage of the fans. Adam Smith's "invisible hand" theory is proven out by the Card's fans consistent attendance. Fans willingly spend their money where they feel they are getting value. Consistent winning with admirable players in a pleasant environment is obviously bringing in fans. I drive 180 miles for games because I want to, not because I'm being deceived into it.

Gordo,

Developing pitching is a proven strategy for success since not many are going to trade good pitching and free agency contracts for pitchers inevitably do not work out well - especially the long ones...

Load up on power pitchers in the draft, international signings and via trade with teams that have excess (Marlins, Tigers. Rays) or don't have a window to win now (D-back, Orioles)

What's your take?

I agree that loading up on pitching has never been more important, given the likelihood of injury and the high replacement cost.

Gordo you are truly the Swiss Army knife of sports writing/reporting. You can write coherently and knowledgeably about a large number of sports and levels. Not many can. My third and final question for you is my third different sport today.

Baseball. I will very likely be eating my own words and freely admit I am looking through Cardinals red colored glasses BUT I am still of the opinion the Cardinals potentially are a better team with DeJong at short and Edman at second. I believe that combo is as good defensively as any pair in the league. Defense still matters. I am old enough to remember Dal Maxvill (who couldn’t hit his weight) who had success as a starting shortstop. The greatest shortstop of all time was known as defense only for many years of his career. I realize PDJ MUST hit somewhat but I am thinking he finally figures it out and is a contributor to a contending baseball team. If the Cardinals don’t think that’s possible I hope they trade him or give him the Jhonny Peralta treatment. Odds of either happening? Thanks for chance to comment.

I wish I could share you optimism about DeJong, but I can't. Once he faded again last year I was done with that.

Hello from a vacay in the Dominican Republic. I see the country has a Cardinals academy here, as well as other MLB teams. What age/level in general are those players?

They are teenagers, with a supposed minimum age of 16 to sign a contract.
