Independent analysts universally rank Walker at or near the top of the MLB-wide prospect list. Are they all wrong? Maybe. But the Cardinals have gained a ton of production from their organizational graduates this season, so the prospect deniers are having a tougher time making their case against the player development model.
The Blues core group going forward could include Robert Thomas (23), Jordan Kyrou (24), Scott Perunovich (24), Ivan Barbashev (26), Pavel Buchnevich (27), Colton Parayko (29), Jordan Binnington (29) and Brandon Saad (29). If Niko Mikkola (26) can work his way in there, that would help. Obviously the team needs Jake Neighbours and Zachary Bolduc to pan out -- and, yes, they will to rebuild the supply chain of younger talent. But I don't know how painful all that has to be.
And folks should feel a lot better about him after recent outings and how productive his return to the minors became. He made the most of that opportunity to pitch under less stressful conditions. He worked out some stuff.
Hudson is 8-7 with a 4.16 ERA. That's not great, but given what he had to overcome with Tommy John repairs that's not terrible either.
You can keep pretending that the Cardinals haven't gained much from Edman, Donovan, Helsley, Carlson, Gorman, Nootbaar, Bader, Yepez, Pallante, Hicks, Thompson, Flaherty and Woodford this season -- but when you add it all up, that's impressive output.
OK, that's it for this time. Catch you next time.
