Wow, I did not expect the Blues to bail on the season. But they did, moving Paul Stastny for a first-round pick and either forward prospect Erik Foley, if he signs, or a fourth-round pick, if he doesn't sign with the Blues. Maybe the Doug Armstrong will lurch into buyer mode right now, but I would not hold my breath.
Stastny filled a massive need here but, no, he didn't perform offensively to the level of his contract. Without the Blues will have trouble competing this season unless Armstrong makes another move to strengthen his offense. Obviously any move Doug makes now would have to help the team beyond this season.
Extending Berglund for less than $4 million per year secured an asset for the long haul. But that contract did include some no movement protection, so I'm sure fans will squawk about that.
Getting a first-round pick for a rental is pretty strong. This is a lot like getting a No. 1 plus Sanford for Shattenkirk. This could lead to other moves, as the Shattenkirk trade did.
I'm guess it signals a sell, but what do I know? I didn't figure this team would sell off Stastny.
Depends on the market. They have talked to teams about Berglund and Sobotka, so we will see.
Sounds like a good diet for Tage Thompson. Fuel him up for the weight room!
For the long haul, sending Kyrou back was for the best. He is killing it in the OHL and he showed some leadership as well. How quickly he sticks in the NHL will depend on how quickly he rounds out his game. Still must prove he is ready to win battles game after game.
He moved to a junior team with Memorial Cup hopes and he will stay in junior hockey until his season is done. And the Blues look increasingly like a team losing playoff hope.
Winnipeg does like him and tried to sign him before. So perhaps the Jets will want to re-up, if their cap allows.
Bouwmeester is playing hurt now and the Blues are beat up on the blue line. So the timing doesn't seem good now. Moving forward, a healthy JayBou could have value as the Blues integrate their young D.
That would take some heavy losing. Then again, when is the last time they won?
He sees a chance to win this spring in Winnipeg. Here? Not so much. The Jets are soaring and they spread talent over three lines. Great fit for him, maybe he can drive up his value.
So do the Blues try to move a player with term, like Sobotka or Berglund, or add a player with term, like a Hoffman.
Yes, I poo-pooed the Stastny sale. Unless Armstrong has another move in play to upgrade, this tanks the season. I believe the Blues get the fourth-round if they don't sign Erik Foley, the prospect from Providence they gained the rights to in this deal.
Yeah, because this team has been running seven or eight players under the 50 limit this season without a farm team. They need to fully stock San Antonio next season, so they will look to add kids.
Maybe, but it will have to be for somebody who can help this team going forward. Remember, their peak talent year appears to be 2019-20.
Not yet. Columbus checked in on them.
Yes, Columbus showed interest due to Kekalainen an Davidson knowing these two. The Blues kept some of Stastny's money to make the deal. I suppose they could do it again.
