I was stunned. Herr was a good player here and also very good with the media. But Brunansky also was quite accommodating.

Mr.Hummel: Congratulations on such a fine career and best wishes on your retirement. I remember sitting with you at the scorer’s table during several McKendree University men’s basketball games you covered in the 1972-73 season and enjoyed brief discussions with you during breaks in the action.

Rick, thanks for all the effort over the years it is always been a pleasure getting comments out for all to see. Speaking of, what do you make of Thompson and Woodford? Will they be on the roster or be included in a trade.? I would like to see Hudson and Cabby sent away. The way Thompson and Woodford threw last season puts them on a solid line to continue this coming season.

Woodford doesn't seem to figure in the Cardinals' plans but I think they are high on Thompson. Hudson could be a trade piece but I would like to see them hang onto Cabrera and try to resurrect him.

I wonder what Mo said to Arenado to convince him not to opt out? I hope he keeps his word and actually goes out and gets a bat and quit dumpster diving like the past several years. Time to spend a little money before Goldy and Arenado are past their primes

I am guessing that Mo laid out the plan to spend money/trade for quality talent and Arenado liked what he heard. Now it is time for Mo to deliver.

The outfield looked pretty good at this time a year ago, eh. Shows you how quickly things can change. But the outfield is not good enough right now.

Thank you so much for your wonderful work over the years. I’m 42 and my grandparents had the Post delivered daily into my adulthood. Can’t imagine the combined hours I’ve spent reading your articles. You’re writing has brought joy to my life and others I’m certain. It has truly been a pleasure and you will be missed.

We all know the big names you have covered -- Lou, Gibby, Ozzie, Big Mac, Albert, and others. It's easy for us as fans to isolate "the greats" but often the underdogs or scrappy guys can have a huge impact on a team. Am interested in who are the two or three lesser known, perhaps utility type players, that made the biggest impacts on the teams you have covered?

I'm glad you mentioned Albert. He surely is on my all-time Cardinals team but I would have to pick a position. I guess it would be at DH because that's where he finished. We can keep McGwire at first base that way.

Happy trails, Rick! Do you think Cardinals fans are spoiled? I think Cards fans spoil this ownership group as much as they spoil fans with the team’s success. And, honestly, the last 6 years it feels like the fans have not been getting a solid return on their investment. The give and take has become more take by the ownership, with a less equitable reinvestment into the team. It seems like they are only willing to do just enough to make the playoffs but concessions, merchandise, and ticket prices reflect more aggressive spending.

Congrats on your tenure. You hit above average in your accuracy and descriptions. Redbird needs are always attached to money, by necessity. How arbitrary is the current ceiling,especially in respect to signing a first tier SS?

It doesn't strike me that a high-priced shortstop is one of the Cardinals' top priorities, given they will have to spend some money to shore up some other areas of more need.

They might have to go to three if interested. Not sure about any mutual interest from Verlander although he and Wainwright are fast friends.

Perhaps the biggest compliment that I can give you after reading your work for 40+ years is that I have no idea what your personal politics, your religious beliefs or general views of the world happen to be. Nor do I have any idea how you personally feel about the Organization, Front Office, Coaches or Players other than describing performances. That is why as much as anything that you are a credible source and well be missed. FWIW, I see a lot of the same in young Mr. Guerrero's writing.

That is one of the best compliments I have received and I thank you. I've always tried to play it down the middle and give the readers and fans as much information as I can so that they can form their own opinions. I don't like to lecture.
