Nostalgia and a timely message too. I like it.
If Ozuna goes, two of the three outfield spots will be up for grabs. Also, Edman has already taken time from Carpenter at third and that can happen again. There is not much blocking going on here.
This is true. Dallas was pretty ordinary, but he would have balanced up the rotation and unlike Wacha he made to the finish line. That said, the 2020 midseason market might be much different than the 2019 market, which was limited.
Again, the market has punished the mid-level starter. Ask Lance Lynn. So Jake took the money, almost $18 million, and he gets to come back again next winter.
Of course, this assumes DeWitt is a eager to jack up his payroll. This would be a false assumption.
Yes, Sandy Alcantarra could be a star here. In Florida, he pitches in the pit of misery.

Nobody is arguing that, except maybe Mozeliak.
If somehow three superior outfielders come out of this pile, all three will get lots of work. Shildt didn't hesitate to bench Carpenter for Edman later in the season, so Fowler could yield some time too. But like Carpenter last year, Fowler will get a good run next season even if he starts slowly.
It sounds funny to say this, but Shildt manages to win every game. That seems like it should always be the case, but veteran managers pace their teams. Shildt was managing like his pants were on fire every night. Look at his bullpen usage. So, no, he was not going to use regular season games to run a tryout camp. He gave guys looks here and there and they had to run with them right away.
Ozuna got much of his shoulder strength back this season, so I do think he took the training more seriously. I believe the hand injury took a bigger toll than his winter training or lack thereof.
I see Edman spending most of his time at third base because I do not see a big comeback from Carpenter.
Will Smith is gone and maybe he wasn't the fit as a lefty. At this point I have no great suggestions.
The franchise should take a hit similar to "Hackgate" with the picks just evaporating instead of going to one team. As for the field staff, how do you suspend the whole crew?
Stack up Mozeliak's record against GMs in similar markets and you can see why he got an extension. Most teams actually post losing records, often with frequency.
There has already been a crackdown, so now strong punishment behind that should do the trick.
