Howdy. I hope you're all doing well today. I'm ready to take your calls. Please fire away.
I believe Cuonzo Martin when he says he wants to stay at Mizzou for a long time. You can never rule anything out, but I think he's committed to building a winning legacy at Mizzou. Considering his roots, this is probably the perfect job for him and his family because he's now so close to his mom and siblings.
All I can say about Wong is that the Cardinals owe it to him and the organization to give him an extended look at the start of this season. I don't put too much stock in spring training stats. We'll know more about Wong and Mike Matheny's commitment to him once the season starts.
The Blues probably wouldn't want to play the Blackhawks in the first round. If the standings hold as they are now, the Blues are set to play the Wild. I don't know that I would like that matchup if I'm with the Blues.
Change is difficult. Seriously, though, it's a tremendous compliment to the Cardinals-Cubs rivalry to have them play in the marquee opening day game on Sunday night.
I would disagree with you. Sandy Alcantara will be special. Alex Reyes will be a star. Delvin Perez is about 3 years away. Magneuris Sierra earned great raves this spring in center field. He's probably a year away. Harrison Bader is real close. I don't know if he'll be a star, but we don't know if any prospect will be a star. I will say there are a lot of impressive young guys in the Cardinals' system. I cannot wait to see how Odalis Garcia develops.
I've been led to believe by people with MLS ties that there will be an MLS team in St. Louis whether the stadium ballot passes. I would be shocked if there isn't an MLS team in St. Louis in 2020.
I like Josh Zeid. He's a very good dude. I covered him when he pitched for the Astros. I think Zeid definitely showed during the WBC that he deserved a minor-league contract.
For as long as I've covered baseball, players have complained about the length of spring training. Baseball folks will tell you that the length of spring training is so that the pitchers can be ready for the season. It needs to be this long so that the pitchers build up their innings and pitch counts.
You might be overthinking this issue. There are very few secrets among scouts.
This is a very good question. If Michael Porter Jr. signs with Mizzou, you'd have to see that Mizzou would be looking pretty. SLU under Travis Ford will be pretty strong, I think, for many years. I wouldn't be surprised if they start dominating the A-10. I would assume that Ford might win more conference titles than Martin at least early on in part because his league might be easier to dominate, but I'm going to say there's no reason why both schools cannot be successful over the next five years.
You make some very good points. I would also prefer a team getting hot at the right time over one that was strong over the entire regular season.
Most serious Cardinals fans know that Wong couldn't be a centerpiece for any trade to acquire Mike Trout. With that said, Mike Trout isn't going anywhere.
I strong suggest you do not put much stock in spring training stats.
As I've said often, please don't put too much stock in spring training stats. I'm not saying Adam Wainwright is going to regain his past front-line starter form, but he should be a solid starter this season. I really think he'll be solid this year.
Yes, the Cardinals will still have their same Opening Day festivities.
If the Pirates acquired Quintana, they might be a contender for a wild-card spot. I don't know if Quintana would be enough to push the Pirates over the Cardinals for second in the division, but he might make the race for second place a tad closer.
Please remember that the Cardinals want to improve their defense. At this point, Grichuk is set to start in left field. Jose Martinez will be a backup outfielder. As long as Grichuk produces, he'll be in the starting lineup. Martinez is a good bat to have on the bench. He can also play first base.
He has strong ties to the area. He seems like the perfect match at this time for Mizzou.
That remains to be seen. Keep in mind that Maddon wants to see Schwarber bat in front of Rizzo and Bryant.
I don't understand this question. Carpenter is set at first base. Adams is not competing with Peralta for a starting job.
