First of all, I'm so proud of Myles Garrett and Pat Mahomes II. I've followed Garrett's entire career and am close friends with people who know him well and describe him as one of the best athletes they've ever worked with. I'm actually still quite young, but I caught a major break when I was real young when I landed a job on the Mets' beat. I covered Mahomes' dad with the Mets. I still remember Pat Mahomes II running around the Mets' clubhouse at Shea Stadium. I have great respect for the Mahomes family, and I bet you that kid will be a great NFL quarterback.
It will be real difficult to keep Jose Martinez out of the lineup if he continues to hit as well as he has. Still, the Cardinals owe it to themselves to see what Grichuk can do over a steady period of playing time.
I'm sure that would be a great plan if the Cardinals are out of the race in July, but I think they'll contend for a wild-card spot all year as long as the starting rotation stays healthy and the bats somehow wake up.
Other than Allen, I bet Vladimir Tarasenko is the most important Blues player. Although he didn't score much in the first round, he helped create multiple game winners, as Mike Yeo mentioned to us recently.
Brett Cecil's struggles are surprising. I expected Carlos Martinez and Dexter Fowler to get off to hot start sand I expected the offense and bullpen to be better from the start. With all that said, this team is not far off.
I think St. Louis will get an MLS team unless the lawsuit against Kroenke and the NFL turns off some of the MLS owners who also own NFL teams. Kroenke and Robert Kraft are two of four MLS owners who own NFL teams.
You offer a solid theory, but I'm sure the players would say they tweaked their swings in hopes of getting better.
There's no doubt that the Cardinals haven't done much to quiet their critics with this slow and sloppy start to the season. I won't argue with your point.
Ultimately, it might make sense to move him to second, where Wong needs to show improved defense and offense.
I hadn't checked to see predictions on this series.
Thank you for your very nice comments. I'm humbled by your praise. I hope to keep improving. As I told Tom Timmermann and Jeremy Rutherford yesterday, I still have a long way to go as a columnist. I'm only one year into the job, and I cringe and some of my early columns. I hope to get better, and I promise to keep telling it like I see it.
The Dodgers aren't going to give you Puig for Wong. That won't happen.
I do think MLS will come to St. Louis.
At this point, wouldn't we have to Max Scherzer?
I think it's a combination of guys not stepping up and claiming positions and ineffectiveness throughout the roster. He's trying his best to find answers, but you cannot blame Matheny for the bullpen's poor start or the offense's poor start. I also don't know how much he can do about the defensive shortcomings throughout the roster, but I will say he deserves some criticism for sending the wrong message with the Adams experiment in left field. There is plenty of blame to go around.
I agree with you. I think I've tried to express that sentiment here by pointing out that this is a playoff team.
Arenado would definitely improve third base, but I'm sure the Rockies would ask for quite a bit in return.
I'm hearing that the MLS2STL folks still haven't given up. I'll share more when I can.
There's no doubt Grichuk needs to raise his slugging percentage if he's going to justify his position in the lineup.
