I don't know Pujols' mindset enough to guess what he would do, but that's a lot of money to turn down.
I will disagree with you because I really expect Alex Reyes and Luke Weaver and Jack Flaherty to contribute. Reyes is a special arm. He's still ranked among the best prospects in baseball despite undergoing Tommy John surgery. He'll be ready to contribute. You also have to understand that Weaver has nothing to prove in the minors. Flaherty and Dakota Hudson should be ready to contribute next season too, and don't forget Sandy Alcantara.
I need to go over his minor-league stats. I don't know.
I expect Magneuris Sierra, Harrison Bader and Luke Weaver to be up when rosters expand, if not earlier. I agree that they will provide huge boosts to the team.
I don't think they're overly concerned. Of those three you mentioned, Flaherty is the closest to the majors. Yet, I think we can all agree that Luke Weaver is ahead of him on the depth chart. Unless Weaver is already in the majors, there's no need to add Flaherty. Once Weaver is up and another arm is needed I would add Flaherty to the 40-man roster. Alcantara struggled in the first half of the season at Class AA Springfield. He's barely now settling into a groove. As a starter, he still has to develop a bit more. Hudson has had a very good year, but he's also still developing as a starter. Unless you need them to pitch out of the bullpen, I wouldn't rush to add Alcantara or Hudson to the 40-man roster.
I don't know how big of an issue the Comptroller's refusal to sign off will be, but it definitely puts the team in a bind if they were expecting that money right away.
I was not in Boston last night, so I can only go by what Derrick Goold wrote.
This quote from Bill DeWitt Jr. might help you understand. Q: Without mentioning names, would your team be willing to absorb a $325 contract?
DeWitt: I think you have to value every contract and every player. That’s one of the things we’ve been pretty disciplined about and have been for a number of years. I think it’s part of the reason we’ve had success. I know you’re referring to Stanton, but there’s other players that have big contracts. We evaluate, ‘What can we afford?’ That’s a good question because we don’t know what could be available down the road. It’s really trying to make sure that when you take on a contract or make a trade you’re getting value not only in the short-term but in the long term. As you can see some of the long-term free agent contracts don’t really work out toward the end. Clubs wish they hadn’t done them. We can afford a payroll that is very competitive and in the top third, which is where our revenues are, and that’s the way we look at it.”
I definitely understand that thinking, but it's a rare fan base that worries about such things.
I don't know why Mizzou's out-of-conference schedule is so weak. I would think that every SEC school should schedule another elite Power 5 team per season.
STLFC definitely has a shot at the playoffs. With 26 points they are in 12th place in the and only two points shy of 12th place even though they have played two fewer games than the New York Red Bulls II and Orlando City B. Preki has done a decent job. I wouldn't say he's actually been overly impressive or a hindrance to his team's success.
You'll hate to hear this, but I would put Matheny on par with Clint Hurdle just behind Joe Maddon of the Cubs.
I wouldn't bet the mortgage on STLFC making the USL playoffs, but I wouldn't bet against it either. They're within striking distance.
I'm always putting Alabama as the No. 1 contender until Nick Saban retires. I'll go with Clemson, Ohio State, Auburn and Oklahoma rounding out my top five contenders.
If I were GM, I would push Weaver to the starting rotation and put Leake in the bullpen if he didn't let me put him on the disabled list with inflammation of the ERA.
You're welcome. Thank you very much for taking the time out to read the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and STL Today.
I disagree with you. I don't know if you truly appreciates what Yadier Molina brings to the table for the pitching staff and in the clubhouse for the entire team. You cannot put a price on all the intangibles.
I would assume Sam Tuivailala.
