Every question has been asked. I would agree that there are times when it might make more sense to remove Martinez late for defensive purposes.
Yes, I would assume he'll be a bat off the bench.
I would find a place for Jedd Gyorko in this lineup.
First of all, your point is not accurate. Have you heard of Jordan Hicks? Moreover, you must consider options and contracts. Some guys can go on the shuttle back and forth between Memphis and St. Louis. Some cannot. Gregerson is starting to settle in.
I shouldn't have to convince you. A look at the standings would tell you that they're a better than .500 team. They'll be better. Heck, Matt Carpenter said last night that this could be the very best Cardinals team he's played on. Mike Matheny agreed. Moreover, I actually expect them to play even better ones their veterans play up to expectations.
I'm shaking my head at this question.
It all depends who is available. If the Cardinals are in contention in late July it will probably mean that their bats have started to heat up.
Lucas Giolito is a good pitcher.
Way too soon, and no. But I did chuckle.
Very good question. I was happy for the players I covered and for all my Houston friends. I was at the World Series, so I didn't actually miss it. I guess if I were to describe my emotions, I would say it was actually bittersweet because they beat my beloved hometown Dodgers.
Gant will definitely shuttle between Memphis and St. Louis this year. He'll be in the bullpen here.
It's complicated. Players need spring training games to build up arm strength and refine their pitches. You cannot put too much emphasis on spring training stats because there are many variables at play. Did you get the hits late in games against minor leaguers early in spring or early in games against major leaguers who are just working on their pitches? Did a pitcher strike out minor leaguers or big league regulars?
O'Neill did get one start. As I mentioned last week, the guys who come up from Memphis to serve as backups or relievers must understand their roles. They shouldn't expect to get consistent playing time, so they must take advantage of their opportunities.
I wouldn't worry too much about that.
I wouldn't say it was a panic move as much as a necessary move. They're going to need him in this bullpen because at this point Bud Norris has been the only consistently strong reliever all year.
I have strong working relationships with many of the players I've covered over the years. I would caution, however, that I don't consider them among my best friends. I've always tried to maintain a professional distance.
Thanks for participating in this week's live chat. I'm headed down to the clubhouse to conduct postgame interviews. Have a great day.
