I would like Starling Marte. But, first the Cardinals will see how their outfield looks with Tyler O'Neill and Harrison Bader looks when both come off the IL--O'Neill perhaps this week. Bader should be back a couple of weeks after that.
Carpenter will return to the bench when O'Neill is back. DeJong isn't hitting cleanup and hasn't been for nearly a week now as Molina has--and quite successfully. The outfield has yet to pan out but the proposed regular outfield hasn't played one game together yet. You have to give that a little time. Kim has made one start and Mikolas none. Results incomplete there and far too early to judge.
Miller was quite good yesterday but he has been inconsistent and also used irregularly, but that's because he has struggled. It is possible he does not finish the season here but he is a big help mentally in the bullpen, which largely is inexperienced so there is a place for him.
Yes, we can all remember both of his hits. I don't think he merits a starting role when O'Neill returns to the outfield and Edman returns to the infield.
Carpenter has been on his back foot for a few years, even when he was hitting well. Yes, he is trying to lift the ball. He is not in the lineup to get singles but it would be propitious for him to mix in a few. You cannot, however, in good conscience, lay the offensive inconsistency at his feet. He wasn't even supposed to be a starter.
Jay Bruce made the Yankees team only because Luke Voit, among others, was hurt. Carpenter plays three positions and is a lefthanded hitter, of which the Cardinals have little on the bench, which is where he will be. No rush to push Carp out the door yet but he is going to have to do better than what we've seen. .
Gorman wouldn't be here until September, if then. He was far from ready offensively for much of the spring. He needs to play an entire minor league season.
Reyes will maintain the ninth inning but you probably can't use him four times a week. Hicks was an established closer when he got hurt in 2019 and you generally don't lose your job just because you're hurt. He could be available to close three days a week, let's say. Sometimes, he and Reyes would be in the eighth and ninth back-to-back. How would that look? Assuming the Cardinals were ahead, of course.
We don't see too many chatters complaining that Molina is coming up on 39. He just has been the Cardinals' best player. The Cardinals won't go after starting pitching until they see how Kim, Mikolas and even Oviedo perform.
I saw him just last week. Everything was fine with The White Rat.
The next election isn't until December but Rolen, having passed the 50% plateau when 75 % is needed, has six more elections to get the percentage he needs. I think he ultimately makes the Hall on the writers' ballot.
First, Nola and Milwaukee's Burnes are Cy Young candidates in my mind. There have been others, like Eflin and Joe Ross, with whom the Cardinals should have done some more business. We've played 2 1/2 weeks so far, and a lot of things seem out of whack, like the Yankees having the worst record in the American League.
Fair enough. Thank you for your kind words.
It's OK for the manager to rant and rave once in a while. He certainly appreciates what Molina has done and is doing. But managers dwell a lot on seeing consistency and Shildt isn't seeing that in any department other than his late-inning bullpen.
The Cardinals are drawing an average of 3.6 walks a game and striking out at over nine times a game. Those need to tighten up a little. All that exit velocity stuff is meaningless when so many exit velocities are zero.
I don't know off-hand how DeJong's solo shot percentage compares with others but he certainly hasn't been able to adopt a good, relaxed approach when hitting with men in scoring position. That is a process he is working on, but will have to work on more to be able to hit in the middle of the lineup. My take is that he has put too much pressure on himself to come through in big situations but there is pressure everywhere in this game.
Of course. But Carlos did hit the pitcher with the bases loaded and two out.
